FORMATION OF SAJA GROUP,
INC.
SAJA Group, Inc., a new non-profit organization, has been created to provide a
stronger and more flexible structural framework to carry out the mission and
activities of SAJA, the South Asian Journalists Association.
As a charitable organization, SAJA Group will conduct many of the public
programs and activities previously organized and run by SAJA, including the
annual journalism convention and job fair, the annual journalism awards, the
student scholarship program, the mentorship program, and other activities of
interest to journalists and individuals interested in South Asia and South
Asians.
SAJA Group, Inc. was registered as a New York non-profit organization on August
14, 2003. SAJA Group is tax-exempt under Section 501 (c ) (3) of the Internal
Revenue Code. The organization will carry out many of the public programs and
activities initiated by SAJA, which was formed in 1994. SAJA Group and SAJA are
legally separate entities.
SAJA Group, Inc. is governed by a five-member Board of Directors. According to
SAJA Group's Bylaws, the members of the Board are the members of the Executive
Committee of SAJA. The current members are S. Mitra Kalita, President; Deepti
Hajela, Vice President; Nina Mehta, Secretary; John Laxmi, Treasurer, and Sree
Sreenivasan.
SAJA Group was organized with an initial grant of $5,000 from SAJA in 2003. It
is expected that additional grants will be made by SAJA to SAJA Group to help
fund SAJA Group's programs and activities. In addition, SAJA Group will solicit
tax-deductible donations from corporations and the public for its activities and
programs.
SAJA remains a membership-based organization. It is a non-profit organization
that is tax-exempt under Section 501 (c) (6) of the Internal Revenue Code. SAJA
will collaborate and work closely with SAJA Group on a range of programs.

SAJA TO WORK CLOSELY
WITH SAJA GROUP, INC. ON VARIOUS ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS
The South Asian Journalists Association (SAJA) is pleased to announce that it
plans to collaborate and work closely with SAJA Group, Inc., a newly created
non-profit organization that is tax-exempt under Section 501 (c ) (3) of the
Internal Revenue code. SAJA Group will carry out many of the public programs and
activities initiated by SAJA.
SAJA Group, Inc. is governed by a five-member board of directors. The five
members are the members of the Executive Committee of SAJA.
By working closely with SAJA Group, SAJA in the long term expects to be able to
leverage the financial support provided by SAJA's members and enhance the level
of financial support available for education, outreach, mentorship and other
activities of journalistic interest.

SAJA GROUP, INC. NAMES NEW BOARD FOR 2005
NEW YORK CITY, Jan. 24, 2005 - SAJA Group, Inc., a non-profit corporation
serving journalists and others interested in South Asia and South Asians across
the U.S. and Canada, announced a new slate of board of directors on January 22,
2005.
Deepti Hajela, an Associated Press newswoman, was elected president, after
having served as vice president in 2004. Vikas Bajaj, a business and government
writer at the Dallas Morning News, was named vice president and convention
chair. Monika Mathur, a news researcher at Associated Press, was named
secretary. John Laxmi, a New York-based freelance writer, continues as
treasurer and Sreenath Sreenivasan, a Columbia University journalism professor and WABC-TV
technology reporter, will serve as the group's Administrator.
These five individuals are appointed as members of the Board of SAJA Group,
Inc. by virtue of their appointment as members of the executive committee of
the South Asian Journalists Association (SAJA) through which most of SAJA
Group, Inc.'s services are rendered to the public.
Hajela takes over from S. Mitra Kalita, who served as president of SAJA
Group, Inc. in 2004.
Deepti Hajela, who is a reporter for the AP's New York City metro bureau, was
raised in New Jersey. She graduated from Northwestern University's Medill
School of Journalism with bachelor's and master's degrees, and has been working
for the AP since 1996. She has been on the SAJA Group, Inc.'s Board since its
formation in August 2003 and helped in formulating an efficient and
collaborative arrangement with SAJA in delivering a growing menu of services to
the public and journalists.
SAJA Group, Inc., in close partnership with SAJA, is preparing for the 2005
convention, which will take place June 16-19, 2005, at Columbia University in
New York. More than 1,000 journalists and guests from around the U.S., Canada,
South Asia and Europe are expected to gather for a series of workshops, panels
and networking events -- highlighted by a gala dinner and the SAJA Journalism
Awards (including the Daniel Pearl Award for Outstanding Reporting on South

2004 was a landmark year for SAJA Group, Inc. as it developed a growing base
of donors and patrons in its first full year of operations. The dramatic
increase in the South Asian population in the United States and growing
importance of U.S.-South Asian relations has seen a huge growth in the coverage of the
community and the region. As a result, SAJA Group, Inc. serves as a valuable
resource for journalists, community organizations and members of the public
trying to understand various complex issues.
