The Atlantic has, for more than 160 years, advanced ideas that matter and sparked global conversation on the most important issues of our time. We aim to bring clarity and original thinking to questions of consequence, on topics ranging from politics, the economy, and global affairs to technology, science, and culture. As the third-longest-running magazine in America, we find ourselves at a remarkable moment: one of both continuation and transformation, of upholding our legacy while continuously reinventing ourselves for the future.

The Atlantic is looking for a Senior Product Manager to ramp up our portfolio of sticky products and features that facilitate deeper habits with readers in support of our growing subscription business.

As the product owner of Habit, you will partner with colleagues in editorial, design, audience research and data science to define an ambitious roadmap for our efforts around personalization and customization, and improved user experiences across newsletters, mobile apps and our homepage.

In this role, you will feel competing pressures: To think broadly and move quickly. You will need to transition easily between altitudes, driving day-to-day execution with our engineering and design teams and managing multiple projects in parallel, while leading collaborative strategic planning efforts and representing the product suite to stakeholders and leadership. You should be as comfortable running a brainstorming session as you are presenting a strategic plan to our CEO.

To be successful, you must be a good listener who can metabolize the values of the newsroom and earn trust and influence across the organization while growing our culture of multi-disciplinary collaboration and inclusion at all levels. At the same time, you must be an exceptional project manager and problem solver with a bias toward action.

    Specific projects include:

    • Defining an ambitious roadmap for customization and personalization that empowers our audience to tailor their experience with all Atlantic products.
    • Driving the roadmap for our mobile apps and developing a notification strategy in partnership with our newsroom and audience team.
    • Optimizing our newsletter suite to deepen relationships with The Atlantic in the Inbox.
    • Designing experiments to identify habit-forming formulas across all surfaces.

    Skills and qualifications:

At least two years of experience as an entry-level product manager or equivalent role.

    • Exceptional project management skills, with great attention to detail and a commitment to rigorous documentation.
    • A talent for navigating editorial, engineering, design, and business conversations.
    • An ability to translate those stakeholder conversations into user-focused product requirements.
    • A strong commitment to collaborative and inclusive planning.
    • Experience presenting strategic plans to leadership.
    • Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams in news organizations.
    • An entrepreneurial and inventive approach to solving problems.
    • An obsession with the details of user experience.
    • A tendency toward systems-oriented thinking and an awareness of the “big picture”.
    • A gift for listening and asking excellent questions.
    • A gift for telling stories that inform and inspire people.
    • An abiding appreciation for the value of great journalism.
    • A lifelong love of learning.
