The Atlantic has, for more than 160 years, advanced ideas that matter and sparked global conversation on the most important issues of our time. We aim to bring clarity and original thinking to questions of consequence, on topics ranging from politics, the economy, and global affairs to technology, science, and culture. As the third-longest-running magazine in America, we find ourselves at a remarkable moment: one of both continuation and transformation, of upholding our legacy while continuously reinventing ourselves for the future.

The Atlantic is seeking an associate editor to join our newsroom audience team and support our growing weekend publishing presence. The ideal journalist for the role should view growing audiences as a creative challenge. News judgment, excellent writing and editing skills, and an appetite to work on ever-evolving social platforms both familiar and new are musts.

The right person for the role will be comfortable working a Tuesday—Saturday or Sunday—Thursday schedule. The role will include occasional nights or early morning shift work during major breaking news moments.

    In this role, you will:

    • Write, edit, test, and post display copy for Atlantic stories on platforms including—but not limited to—social media platforms, the mobile app, Apple News, and the homepage.

    • Work with the senior editor for audience and the insights editor to develop and execute plans for engaging audiences with Atlantic projects across a range of digital platforms, with a focus on reaching and building habit with weekend audiences.

    • Advance the team’s efforts to understand the reading preferences of audiences on each platform where the Atlantic maintains a presence through regular experimentation and close communication with platform partners.

    • Help communicate audience best practices across the newsroom.

Qualities of a successful candidate include:

    • Experience working in a daily news environment

    • The ability to communicate clearly with a remote team while on a shifted schedule, and accomplish both discrete tasks and longer-term projects on deadline

    • Scrupulous attention to detail, including writing structure, mechanics, grammar, and spelling

    • A collegial, energetic approach to problem solving and creative endeavors

    • Experience working with editorial data and tracking tools (Google Analytics, Parse.ly, etc.) is a plus
