Full-Time Executive Editor Opening @ Syria Central (start-up)

    News start-up, founded by a seasoned foreign correspondent, seeks to hire a full-time Executive Editor interested in foreign news. Led by journalists and technologists, the website will be exploring new ways to tell the Syria story, adding context to content. It is an effort to innovate storytelling, building a platform that combines the best of journalism with the most advanced digital tools of the day.

     
    The Executive Editor is responsible for all aspects of the editorial process, including: content strategy, copyedits, rewrites, and production schedule approved for posting by the Managing Editor. Subsidiary tasks include researching potential feature topics and prospective guests. The Executive Editor is a full-time position. A monthly stipend will be offered, and the position will grow with the venture.  

     

    Key Responsibilties:

    • ·           Create editorial schedule for Managing Editor; design content strategy
    • ·           Serve as principal coordinator of editing and production process 
    • ·           Supports Managing Editor by:
    o    Acting as liaison with contributors and guests to help create best final product, highlighting key topics, developing story structure, and making editorial changes.
    o    Coordinating production process.
    o    Brainstorming future substantive themes and editorial and promotion strategy.
    o    Conducting additional research and writing as needed.
    o    Directs, coordinates, supervises, and evaluates activities of interns and production staff to ensure work progresses on schedule.

    Qualifications


    • ·           B.A./B.S. required. Ability to write clearly with superior grammar and editing skills and superior attention to detail. Ability to work closely with a range of individuals with diverse interests and backgrounds.
    • ·           Prefer up to 5 years of related editorial experience in news or a policy-related journal or publishing environment.
    • ·           Background and interest in international affairs/contemporary foreign policy/focus on the Middle East and Syria is preferable.
    • ·           Willingness to work hours demanded by production and newscycles.
