    Job Description:

The Simons Foundation is seeking a writer/editor to identify newsworthy developments in the life sciences, report and write news and feature articles, and edit articles on a range of scientific topics for its editorially independent science news service. In addition to assigning freelancers and editing their work, editing tasks include writing headlines, captions, summaries and other display copy, and researching and securing permissions for photos and graphics. Writing/editing duties will be split roughly 50-50, with some week-to-week variability based on need. Occasional travel may be required for this New York City-based position, and the writer/editor may also be required to attend and report from science conferences as assigned.

    Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be an experienced science journalist, a superb writer and editor with impeccable news judgment, and a diehard advocate for the highest standards in journalism and scientific accuracy. Please note: This is not an entry-level position.

    • At least five years’ experience covering life sciences (with an emphasis on basic life science research over health/medicine) for major mainstream publications. Additional experience reporting on other topics is a plus.
    • Must have experience editing for a major publication (and be willing and able to edit articles about math/physical/computer sciences, in addition to life sciences) and be able to attract top-notch freelancers.
    • Must be comfortable writing news and feature articles under Web deadlines and be fluent in the best print editing standards and online conventions.
    • Must be detail-oriented and organized, and demonstrate command of the highest standards of written English.
    • Must be comfortable working for a digital publication. Candidates who come from a print background must have some familiarity, however derived, with online culture and how it functions.
    • Must be an excellent communicator and team player who is experienced working with other contributors.
    • Experience researching visual content to illustrate articles, as well as obtaining permissions.
    • Ability to coordinate publication schedules and manage relationships with freelancers and partner organizations.
    • Some content management system experience, specifically WordPress, is desirable, as is basic familiarity with Web metrics and SEO.

This full-time position reports to the managing editor and offers a competitive salary and excellent benefits. To apply, send your resume, cover letter and 8-10 relevant writing and editing samples to: tlin@simonsfoundation.org. No phone calls, please.
