    Job Description

    Government Executive Media Group, a division of Atlantic Media, seeks an experienced, digital-savvy editor to lead its expanded coverage of national security issues. We’re looking to provide smart, indispensable, accessible and timely content across a variety of platforms for decision makers in defense policy and execution.

    Responsibilities Include:

    • Overseeing daily coverage of defense issues, from online breaking news stories and analysis pieces to in-depth print articles
    • Recruiting a team of internal and external content contributors
    • Establishing a distinctive voice that goes beyond the news, with second-day analysis on the first day
    • Working with Atlantic Media sister publications to share content on defense-related issues
    • Editing news stories, articles ranging from breaking news stories to full-length analysis pieces on deadline
    • Overseeing the creation of innovative online tools and features
    • Shaping defense coverage in Government Executive magazine
    • Serving as the face and voice of Government Executive Media Group at defense-oriented conferences and events

    Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate:

    • 5+ years of professional journalistic experience as an editor and/or writer covering defense, including serving in leadership roles
    • Strong writing and editing skills and high attention to detail
    • Deep experience and journalistic contacts in the national security arena
    • Digital reporting, publishing and social media experience
    • Leadership experience in deadline-driven journalism
    • Ability to direct the day-to-day work of a team of reporters, web producers and independent content providers in a collaborative work environment
    • Passion for national security and defense topics
    • A positive, good-natured, energetic attitude
