    The Opportunity

90.5 WESA is looking for a General Assignment Reporter who can cover fast-moving, breaking news as well as in-depth reports on issues of significance in the Pittsburgh region. You’ll produce spot reports as well as insightful enterprise and features or WESA radio newscasts and its digital news platforms. You’ll be comfortable working closely with a team of reporters and helping to help mentor and guide early-career colleagues.

    The ideal candidate will:

    • experiment with and embrace storytelling for audio, online and social media, always seeking the most effective ways to inform and serve the residents of Pittsburgh with the news and critical information they need.
    • consistently seek out and include diverse voices, experiences and communities in coverage, while working with colleagues to build a truly inclusive and equitable newsroom.
    • thrive amidst the pace of a daily newsroom that hustles to beat the market while valuing the craft of deep, enterprise reporting and audio-rich production.

    Who Are You?

You’re an innovative, observant journalist who can distill the germ of an impactful story from a routine public meeting, a dense academic study, a tipster’s call or a conversation with your neighbor. You understand your community what’s great, what should be better and you’ve built a track record of reporting that makes listeners and readers respond and care about those issues, too.

You push yourself consistently to be the best journalist and storyteller you can be, and you hold yourself to impeccable ethical standards. You believe in your colleagues, and you’re as invested in their success as your own.

Ideally, you’ll have experience in reporting and shaping audio as well as online gems, but a lack of audio experience isn’t a deal-breaker.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • A Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field is required.
    • 5 years of journalism experience

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Successful public radio reporting and audio digital editing experience is desirable
    • A proven track record of reporting or editing original, enterprise stories
    • Excellent communication and organizational skills, public speaking ability and demonstrated writing ability
    • Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously and to adapt to changing priorities/conditions
    • Experience incorporating audience and community engagement into the fabric of the story process
    • Familiarity with audio storytelling and the public media system
    • Excellent news judgment, with both day-of news stories and innovative follows

    Who Are We?

Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting is a team full of passionate and fun people dedicated to our crafts as well as our communities. Our organization plays a critical role in building connections across southwestern Pennsylvania and strengthening our communities – and WESA’s journalism and a relentless focus on the issues that matter are just two of the ways in which we work to inform and engage our communities.

We operate two local public radio stations and a local newsroom that serves the community across radio, digital and event platforms. 90.5 WESA is Pittsburgh’s NPR News Station and WESA News is an award winning, dynamic and ambitious newsroom serving southwestern Pennsylvania over-the-air, online and through our daily newsletter, Inbox Edition. 91.3 WYEP is one of the most highly regarded non-commercial Triple-A music stations in the country and has been a cultural institution in Pittsburgh for almost 50 years.  With a combined weekly listenership of more than 153,000 people and more than 60,000 social media followers, this is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced reporter to help PCBC continue to grow.

What’s it like working at PCBC?

The range for compensation is $44,000-$58,500. As a full-time exempt employee, you get access to PCBC’s benefits package, including our retirement plan (with a match of up to 6%!), medical, dental and vision, three weeks of vacation, sick time, 10 company holidays and 8 weeks of paid new parent leave.  We also offer paid parking, which is helpful when we can all get back into the office. PCBC invests in our professional growth and encourages continuing education and participation in conferences and seminars.

We place a high priority on employee safety and well-being; given the current COVID-19 pandemic, access to the Community Broadcast Center — our headquarters in the heart of Pittsburgh’s historic South Side — is restricted, and most operations are remote.

PCBC is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer.  All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.
