    The Associated Press seeks a reporter for an 18-week temporary position covering state government and spot news in Trenton, New Jersey.
    After orientation to AP operations, this reporter would work primarily from the Statehouse, rooting out original stories for state and national  audiences. We are seeking a journalist who excels at accountability journalism, has a track record of aggressive and successful source building, is adept at using documents and public records to break news, and who can set the agenda by working sources and writing about news and issues before other news outlets.
    JOB REQUIREMENTS: Candidates should have a track record of excellence as a reporter and writer with strong news judgment and a commitment to aggressively pursuing spot news and developing hard-edge enterprise. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of state government and some experience covering legislative sessions. The candidate will have an ability to manage a beat and develop sources quickly, break stories and produce spot and enterprise stories that explain how state government action or inaction affects people.  Multimedia gathering experience is a plus.  Authorization to work in the U.S. is required as is the ability to read, write, and speak English.

    Reporters Needed To Study State Government Corruption
    We’re looking for top-notch journalists to investigate the risk of corruption in their state governments. Your work will lead to nationally-distributed stories and state-by-state rankings. You’ll spend 100-120 hours over several months (part-time, freelance) working with the nation’s top investigative journalism organization – The Center for Public Integrity.     The State Accountability Project will rely on original, in-depth reporting and data collection in each state to uncover areas of potential corruption in our statehouses. The Center is now hiring reporters on a part-time, free-lance basis to complete the 50-state analysis. The project will cover a wide range of “integrity indicators,” including: state budget processes; state pension fund management; financial disclosure; campaign finance laws; civil service hiring and firing practices; and freedom of information laws. The end result: a 50-state ranking of government accountability, complete with scorecards and stories that demonstrate where states succeed and where they fail.

    Ideal candidates will have:
    ·         5+ years of experience covering state government, and experience with in-depth, detail-oriented research and reporting.
    ·         A strong commitment to accuracy, truth telling, and holding those in power accountable for their actions.
    ·         Ability to deliver quality work on deadline with limited supervision.
    ·         Solid computer skills
    ·         Experience in investigative reporting is a plus.
    Reporters will be assigned up to three months of work at competitive wages and may choose to dedicate themselves full- or part-time to the project as long as they can meet project deadlines. Timetables may vary depending on the reporter’s schedule.
