The Tow Center for Digital Journalism at the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University is looking for a research director to lead a new research program. The program is currently fully-funded by The Tow Foundation and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation for two years. As a result, we are seeking a full-time officer of research (open rank) who will act as research director and be appointed for one year, which is renewable for a second.  The Tow Center was established in 2010 and the successful applicant has the opportunity to help shape its development and reputation in this field.

The successful applicant should have a close interest in and knowledge of current practices and issues relating to digital journalism, and a track record of producing innovative applied research in this area, which is of relevance to journalists and news organizations.   Relevant experience in commercial or non-profit organizations is also helpful.

The successful candidate should in particular have an interest in and an ability to work with quantitative data and a full understanding of how the real time social web is shaping the future of journalism and newsrooms. Although a PhD is not a prerequisite of the post, it is desirable .

The post will require the Research Director to identify and develop suitable research projects, allocate funding to research applicants, produce new and original ideas for research into this rapidly evolving field, and have the ability to produce research projects which utilize new, appropriate methods.

In consultation with the Director of the Tow Center, the research director will also have responsibility for working with research fellows on publishing and publicizing the research work of the Center, including setting a digital iterative schedule for publication. The number of fellows and the length of fellowship will depend upon the strength of the proposals. We estimate this person will manage three to six projects of varying complexity and length simultaneously. Fellows may work on site or remotely. The research director will write periodic reports for the funders, and will be responsible for managing the project budget and complying with the terms of the grants. Excellent communications skills are a requirement of the post.

The Center's relationship with the Graduate School of Journalism offers the opportunity to take part in the life of the school and work closely with the students and faculty of both the Journalism School and other graduate schools within the University.
