COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PRODUCER, NEWS AND PROGRAMS

    New Hampshire Public Radio (NHPR) is seeking an energetic, organized and curious Community Engagement Producer who will work with our newsroom and programs to manage and expand the station’s community engagement and outreach efforts. This producer will support our reporting on important issues in New Hampshire and bring new voices and perspectives into our coverage. They will initiate and oversee multiple outreach projects on various platforms, including broadcast, NHPR’s website, social media, newsletters and in-person events. This person will play a key role in NHPR’s efforts to grow as an inclusive news organization, engaging with new and diverse audiences in the state. This position reports to the Managing Editor and will be based in our newsroom in Concord.

    Our ideal candidate will have excellent news judgment; strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills; a willingness to embrace technology and experiment with new platforms; and an interest in engaging with different communities. Collaboration is also key to how we work, and we’re looking for someone who loves teaming up with others. NHPR is committed to mentoring our staff, including candidates from untraditional professional backgrounds, and helping them develop as journalists and leaders. 

    NHPR’s newsroom is currently operating remotely due to the pandemic, and this job can be performed remotely as well for the time being, though we expect that the Community Engagement Producer will eventually work out of our offices as a vital part of our newsroom. With beaches, lakes, cities and mountains.     Responsibilities include:

    • Launch and manage NHPR engagement projects.
    • Monitor and organize incoming emails, voicemails, social channels and survey responses.
    • Vet tips, comments and questions to cultivate sources and content for the newsroom and programming teams.
    • Develop systems to streamline the flow of contacts and story ideas to content and audience teams. 
    • Produce audio or digital features for NHPR based on engagement projects.
    • Engage with communities around the state to extend NHPR’s reach and deepen our connection with our audience.
    • Utilize social media applications, such as Facebook, Twitter and others, to share projects with the NHPR audience.
    • Participate in station fundraising, live appearances and sponsorship activities, as required.
    • Seek professional development opportunities, with support of managers, and take the initiative to gain new professional skills.

    Qualifications:

    We believe a strong newsroom includes journalists from a range of backgrounds, with different skills, experiences and passions.     • A minimum of one year of experience in journalism, marketing, research, community organizing or a related field.
    • Excellent writing and organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
    • Demonstrated news judgment in recognizing the relative importance of a news story and current issues.
    • Demonstrated initiative and ambition in completing projects.              
    • Passion and intuition for radio, a keen eye and ear for media trends and audience needs.
    • Ability to represent NHPR standards and code of ethics.
    • B.A. or relevant experience.

    Other qualifications that might be useful:

    • Experience using Adobe Audition or other audio editing programs.
    • Copy editing skills.
    • Experience organizing community events.
    • Experience using any of the following tools: Google Forms, Sheets and Documents; Microsoft Outlook and other MS Office tools; Slack; Mailchimp; Hearken and NPR’s CMS Core Publisher. 
    • Technologically versatile with willingness to expand skills. Multimedia skills, including experience in producing or editing digital media as well as audio, are desirable.  
    • Proficiency in a language other than English.
