    New Hampshire Public Radio (NHPR) is seeking an innovative and collaborative journalist to join our newsroom as Digital News Editor. This editor will help oversee and shape NHPR’s online journalism strategy and play a hands-on role in digital planning and publishing. We are looking for an experienced journalist who will play a key role on the newsroom’s editorial team, working with reporters and across content teams to ensure NHPR’s online content is timely, useful, engaging and represents the ambitions and quality of our reporting. They will help ensure that our digital news product aligns with our broadcast reporting, and will also seek out ways to push our journalism into new, creative and impactful directions. The position reports to the News Director and will be based in our newsroom in Concord.

    Our ideal candidate will have a background in digital, print or broadcast journalism with an instinct for breaking news and a demonstrated commitment to innovation and audience growth.  Collaboration is also key to how we work, and we’re looking for someone who loves teaming up with others. NHPR is committed to mentoring our staff, including candidates from untraditional professional backgrounds, and helping them develop as journalists and leaders. 

    NHPR’s newsroom is currently operating remotely due to the pandemic, and this job can be performed remotely as well for the time being, though we expect that the Digital News Editor will eventually work out of our offices as a vital part of our newsroom.     Responsibilities include:

    • Work in conjunction with the News Director and Managing Editor to help plan NHPR’s daily and long-term digital news coverage and publishing strategy; edit and publish stories on NHPR.org.
    • Oversee NHPR’s news site in collaboration with the audience team and senior platform producer.
    • Help plan and oversee digital feature reporting in collaboration with reporters, producers and editors, including layout and multimedia assets/interactives. 
    • Develop new opportunities for data visualizations, interactives and other graphics to supplement NHPR audio/digital stories or as standalone reporting projects. 
    • Play a key role on the editorial team, including editing newscasts and audio stories, shaping projects, features and series, and “baking in” digital plans at the outset of reporting.
    • Work with NHPR's audience team to ensure our digital stories reach large and diverse audiences.
    • Ensure that our journalism adheres to the highest ethical standards and practices. 
    • Act as a face of the newsroom to external audiences as needed.
    • Participate in on-air fundraising as needed.        
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    We believe a strong newsroom includes journalists from a range of backgrounds, with different skills, experiences and passions.     • A minimum of two years of experience working in media.  
    • Excellent writing, copy editing and organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines.
    • Experience in a leadership role on a team or project.
    • Demonstrated news judgment in recognizing the relative importance of a news story and in developing stories appropriately.
    • Experience with digital storytelling and presentation, including visualizations and graphics.          
    • Passion and intuition for radio, a keen eye and ear for media trends and audience needs.
    • B.A. or relevant experience.

    Other qualifications that might be useful:

    • Experience with Excel and other data presentation tools, including coding.
    • Comfort and skill using social media.
    • Technologically versatile with willingness to expand skills. Multimedia skills, including experience in producing or editing film and audio, are desirable. 
    • Proficiency in a language other than English.
