We are hiring an investigative reporter for our Washington office, a critical job holding federal agencies accountable and unraveling government decisions that impact people’s lives. It’s a role designed for a hard-charging, mission-driven investigator who can drill into an agency’s inner workings to find misspent money, questionable ethics and bad decision-making. This job offers what has become an increasingly rare reporting opportunity: Choose a subject, and we will give you the time and support to deliver powerful results.

We’re looking for a reporter who:

    1. Has a track record of aggressive federal government reporting and landing revelatory stories.

    2. Shows the ability to do stories that are important and powerfully told.

    3. Knows how to use data to complement reporting and wants to use reader engagement to make stories better.

    4. Has sources in Washington agencies or the determination to make them.

    5. Appreciates team work. Everybody at ProPublica has their own superpower. And we do our best work together.

Applicants should show a consistent track record of persistence, resourcefulness and determination to get inside places where they are not welcomed. Washington experience is a plus.

ProPublica is dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. (Here is a breakdown of the ProPublica staff.) We’re committed to diversity and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and ages. And we are taking steps to meet that commitment. We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.

We want to hire journalists who bring a diversity of experiences, talents and viewpoints to their work. So, if you don’t think you can check off every box on the list above but are confident you can contribute to our efforts, please don’t hesitate to apply.

If all of this sounds exciting to you, please apply using this form.

The job is based in Washington, D.C., but we’re open to remote working if the fit is right.

Questions? Send them to marilyn.thompson@propublica.org. No phone calls, please.
