South and Southwest Reporters

As ProPublica expands its regional operation into the South and Southwest, we are looking for reporters to join teams in each region. You will take on ambitious, compelling stories grounded in these regions but with national resonance, designed to surprise, reveal, inform and bring about change.

The South has long been the focus of some of ProPublica’s most ambitious coverage. Meanwhile the Southwest provides a front-row seat to the raging battles over immigration, climate change and population growth. Our investigations have drawn attention to the disproportionate toll of bankruptcies in Memphis, Tennessee, the inadequate unemployment system in North Carolina and prosecutorial misconduct in Nevada courts. Our Local Reporting Network partners have also produced work that has had impact across both regions.

Now, we want to expand our ability to uncover gaps in oversight, abuses of power, conflicts of interest and betrayals of the public trust throughout these important regions.

    We are hiring:

    • Six reporters reporting for our Atlanta office to cover the South, focusing on Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee.

    • Five reporters reporting for our Phoenix office to cover the Southwest, focusing on Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah and possibly Colorado.

    We’re looking for reporters who:

    • Have produced original, revelatory, in-depth or investigative stories. If that experience is in the South or Southwest, all the better, but we are open to applicants with strong bodies of work from other places. You don’t have to be an “investigative reporter,” but your work should show a dedication to digging for the truth.

    • Ache to report stories that are both important and powerfully told, and have a vision for how they’d cover the South or Southwest.

    • Have experience with or ideas about all the possible ways we can do journalism now: from deep data digging to working with readers to marrying narrative and investigative forms.

    • Want to bring an accountability lens to the issues of the day through quick investigations reported over a couple of weeks and longer projects that you dig into for a few months (or more).

    • Really like working with others. We are a highly collaborative newsroom, both across our team and with other news organizations regionally and nationally. We believe we do our best work together.

We anticipate that at least some of the reporting jobs will be based in Atlanta and Phoenix, but we are open to candidates being based elsewhere in the states that our units will cover.

We know there are great candidates who may not fit into what we’ve described above or who have important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

ProPublica is dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. (Here is a breakdown of the ProPublica staff.) We’re committed to diversity and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and ages. And we are taking steps to meet that commitment. We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.

These positions are full time and include benefits. Given the pandemic, we will consider remote applicants, though reporters will ultimately be based in the region they are hired to cover. If you currently live elsewhere, we’ll relocate you in accordance with our policies.

If all of this sounds exciting to you, apply using this form. We will begin reviewing applications on Jan. 4. We hope to have this process complete by the end of February 2021 and the reporters in place no later than April 2021.
