Joan Konner Visiting Professor of Journalism

The Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University invites applications for a full-time, visiting professor (rank to be determined) to be appointed for two years.

As the Joan Konner Visiting Professor of Journalism, the incumbent will contribute to strengthening our teaching of journalism in a changing media landscape. Teaching assignments may include teaching a foundational Reporting or Writing course and/or a seminar in their specialty area, supervising masters’ projects, and advising students. The candidate may also contribute to the Master of Arts program as well as the dual degree journalism and computer science program. We are particularly interested in candidates’ ability to teach about the complexities of race, ethnicity and other forms of diversity as they apply to journalism.

The ideal candidate would have a substantial publishing record as well as experience as a teacher, writer and editor. Demonstrated experience with investigative journalism or qualitative and quantitative reporting, including but not limited to methods in data collection, analysis and visualization, is preferred. The School embraces diversity and seeks candidates with the ability to work with and attract dynamic and diverse groups of faculty, staff and students.

To qualify for this two-year visiting professorship the candidate must currently hold an appointment at another academic institution.

A bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.

This two-year visiting position is expected to be appointed from July 1, 2021, through June 30, 2022, with a renewed appointment from July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023, pending performance and administrative approval.
