Engagement Director -- Colorado News Collaborative

The Colorado News Collaborative is a nonprofit working with more than 100 news outlets across Colorado to bring better news to all Coloradans by collaborating on in-depth stories and innovating journalism to better serve our communities and our democracy. We are looking for a Community Engagement Director who will find ways to help COLab and its partners be more responsive to communities and their information needs.

We are seeking someone who is passionate about the idea that quality journalism can change lives for the better. You should have both experience and fresh ideas about how to engage underserved communities and develop social media campaigns. If you have some experience in community organizing, that could be a plus.

How do you know if this job is right for you?

You speak fluent digital media; you’re creative, a good writer, a decent photographer, and can edit video. You are comfortable as a public speaker (Spanish preferred). You are engaging, innovative, and believe knowledge is power.

Most importantly, the idea of finding new ways to share information and reach new communities excites you. You like finding better ways to do important things.

    What you’d be doing:

    • Find new ways to connect community members and media

    • Work with journalists to ensure content is responsive to, reflects and reaches underserved communities

    • Help communities identify all resources within each community that could strengthen its ability to meet local information needs

    • Engage the public to build demand for civic information and evangelize about its importance to equity and democracy

    • Maintain an obligation to the public and endeavor to show newsrooms the value of relationship with community

    • Work with COLab staff and contractors to build strategic partnerships within communities (such as colleges, libraries, civic organizations) to meet local needs

    • Work with Colorado Press Association members and other COLab partners to grow affinity and increase engagement between local media and their communities

    • Develop creative ways to spark engagement beyond, but still including, in-person events

    Who you’d be working with:

The COLab staff is small, but our reach is big. You would report to Executive Director Laura Frank, a pioneer of collaborative journalism and a news entrepreneur. Your teammates would include award-winning journalists and coaches Tina Griego and Susan Greene. Administrative Director Alison Cooper would always have your back. Then there are the more than 150 journalists from across the state who have signed up to work with COLab. So you’d be working with journalists from the largest to the smallest newsrooms in Colorado. There’s a lot of energy within the group for innovation and quality journalism.

    What you’d get:

We believe that to meet our mission, you will need to be able to do your best work in a place that makes you feel supported, welcomed and valued.

We pay a wage that is commensurate with your experience and competitive with similar jobs. We’ve targeted this salary at $60,000. And we have a range of benefits that include medical, dental and vision insurance, a 401K, and paid vacation and holidays. This position is grant-funded; the current grant spans two years.

    Diversity Equity and Inclusion:

The Colorado News Collaborative is committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in our staff, volunteers, programs, and partners. We encourage applicants of diverse abilities, backgrounds, and life experiences to apply. COLab also is committed to equal employment opportunities and prohibits the unlawful discrimination against applicants or employees based on race, color, national origin, ancestry, creed, religion, sex, age, disability, genetic information, veteran status, sexual orientation, marital status, gender identity or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local law.

HOW TO APPLY: Interested candidates should email a cover letter and resume to careers@openmediafoundation.org with the subject line "Engagement Director: Colorado News Collaborative." Applications received on or before Friday, Feb. 12, 2021, will receive priority review.
