Mashable is hiring an experienced and energetic space reporter.

Our ideal writer breaks down complicated topics so that all readers — even those who haven’t taken a science class since 8th grade — can enjoy and understand their stories. While enthusiastic about space, they should be skeptical about outlandish claims. (No, it’s probably not aliens.

While the reporter will focus on space exploration, including such topics as NASA’s Artemis mission and SpaceX’s Starship, there’s room to cover everything from quasars to Star Wars. The ideal candidate is fascinated by how the internet shapes narratives around space and space travel. They’ve probably seen a few sci-fi movies in their life, and have a strong interest in consumer technology. 

The reporter will be responsible for writing a mix of news and analysis, explainers, and in-depth reported features. They should be comfortable working in a variety of formats across multiple platforms as needed. Flexibility is a must. The role is best suited for a natural self-starter with strong journalism skills, a keen attention to detail, and a lively voice.

• Capable of day-to-day coverage of space news, as well as the ability to write in-depth features.
• Able to clearly express compelling opinions on topics such as private space travel.
• Comfortable cultivating relationships with scientists, NASA, and private space companies. 
• Willing to get on the phone, connect with sources, and push a news hit forward.
• Naturally curious and full of ideas: You’re eager to pitch new story ideas every day.
• An excellent and engaging writer with a firm grasp of AP style with the ability to quickly turn around clean, accurate copy to meet tight deadlines.

Qualifications

• 2-4 years relevant experience writing about space, preferably at a digital media publication.
• Strong communication skills and willingness to take initiative.
• A natural reporter with a compelling voice.
• Knowledge of the basic scientific concepts needed for excellent space coverage. 
• A self-starter as well as a team player (a sense of humor is a must!).
• Understanding of Mashable's core coverage areas and voice.
