In These Times, a national, monthly magazine that has covered politics and social movements from the left since 1976, is seeking a full-time investigative editor.

The editor will work primarily on stories for In These Times’ Leonard C. Goodman Institute for Investigative Reporting, which offers competitive rates to support ambitious investigations to be published in In These Times and InTheseTimes.com. The Institute has made a name for itself uncovering corporate wrongdoing, exposing the toll of U.S. warmongering, and telling the stories of low-wage workers, Native people and others to whom the mainstream media gives short shrift.

The editor will be responsible for managing all aspects of an investigation, from writer recruitment and story selection to publication and promotion, as well as co-administering the Institute with In These Times’ Executive Editor. The Goodman Institute supports both early-career and established investigative reporters; the investigative editor should be adept at calibrating their editing to the author’s experience level. They must be adept in offering different modes of support — giving pep talks, planning reporting trips, navigating legal difficulties, steering out of rabbit holes, calling it when an investigation has reached a dead end, and rolling up their sleeves and collaborating as needed.

    • 2+ years investigative editing experience or 3+ years investigative reporting experience
    • Experience planning and structuring complex investigations
    • Exceptional editing skills
    • A passion for social justice
    • BIPOC and members of other groups underrepresented in media are strongly encouraged to apply

In These Times has frequently scooped the mainstream media on stories ranging from the first coverage of global warming and extensive investigative reporting on the Iran Contra scandal in the ’80s to early in-depth coverage of the genocide in the Sudan in 2004.

You will join a close-knit team that cares passionately about economic, racial and climate justice. We’re also a proud union workplace with an internal culture that strives to live up to the ideals we advocate every day through our journalism.

    Salary $70,000-$80,000, commensurate with experience.

This is a full-time, 40-hour a week position with generous benefits, including:

    • 100% paid medical, dental and vision insurance, including full coverage for partners and dependents
    • 100% paid short-term and long-term disability insurance, as well as life insurance
    • Employer matched (3%) SIMPLE IRA plan
    • 16 paid holidays and 20 days paid vacation
    • 15 weeks paid parental leave

In These Times is a NewsGuild union workplace, and this is a union position. Our offices are located in Chicago, Illinois, (just off the Western Blue Line) but we are currently working remotely due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We are open to this being a full-time remote position through March of 2023 and possibly longer, with occasional travel to Chicago.

Email resume, cover letter, and an editing sample (a draft of a story in which your comments and edits are visible) to jobs@inthesetimes.com. Editing samples will be treated as confidential. Applications will be processed on a rolling basis.
