    Crain’s New York Business seeks a managing editor to oversee its best-in-class coverage of business and economic news in New York City. 

     

    Reporting to the editor, this is the No. 2 position in our newsroom.  The managing editor provides day-to-day newsroom leadership in the country's largest and most competitive news market, guiding the editorial staff in developing and executing news stories, features, trend pieces and other information of interest to business owners, executives and professionals operating in the five boroughs of New York City. The managing editor also plays a key role in developing and executing the broader editorial strategies of Crain's New York Business, working with the editor on conferences, events, multimedia projects, special issues and other editorial extensions of the highly trusted Crain's New York brand.

     

    Duties include:

    • Working with reporters to develop story ideas for our weekly print publication and daily Web site
    • Planning coverage for the upfront news section of the paper, an agenda-setting mix of scoops, personality-driven features and forward-looking analysis
    • Editing stories for print, online and long-term projects
    • Coordinating the work of reporters, copy editors, designers, Web producers, researchers and others involved in delivering stories in print and online, and ensuring that all newsroom operations meet every deadline. 

     

    Requirements

    The position requires several years of business journalism experience as a reporter and editor.

     

    It also requires:

    • Strong news judgment and a thorough understanding of business, finance and economics. Knowledge of the New York City business and political community a definite plus.
    • A skillful editing touch with news and feature stories. You must be able to quickly turn raw copy into polished, engaging stories with the edge, sophistication and authority readers expect from Crain’s New York.
    • A competitive nature; immunity to corporate and government spin and intimidation; determination to strip away the veneer of PR palaver and get the real story; ability to motivate reporters and work collaboratively with wide-ranging personality types across the newsroom.
    • An ability to represent Crain's New York at public events, including our own newsmaker forums and Crain conferences, and in local media.
