The Committee to Protect Journalists, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the defense of press freedom, seeks a researcher for its Asia program to work full-time in our New York City office.
Documenting and responding to press freedom abuses in the region.
Communicating regularly with journalists and human rights activists in Asia and with U.S. human rights groups;
Reviewing domestic and foreign news website and publications;
Drafting letters of appeal, news statements, news alerts, and blogs;
Researching and writing reports on press freedom issues in the region;
Building databases and media contacts for media outlets and partners in Asia;
Maintaining research files; and assists in CPJ's advocacy efforts throughout the region;
Actively maintaining and expanding the programʼs social media presence.
An advanced (graduate) degree or BA + 2 years of relevant experience.
Knowledge of Asia, media, and freedom of speech issues in the region;
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment;
English-language writing and reporting skills;
Proficiency in reading and writing news articles and conducting telephone interviews;
Language skills other than English are expected; fluency in Chinese or a South Asian language required.
