The California Report morning show reaches around a million listeners and has a robust podcast to complement the broadcast. The show delivers two – sometimes three – separate and distinct editions at 5:50 a.m., 6:50 a.m. and 8:50 a.m. every morning.

In order to cover the state comprehensively, KQED is hiring a new Host/Correspondent. The ideal candidate will be driven and excited – able and willing to juggle two high-pressure, high-profile roles with equal depth and breadth. This involves hosting the morning show on a regular basis, and then shifting to cover critical breaking and enterprise news from around the region, delivering stories and work for The California Report, The California Report Magazine, our podcasts and our digital platform, as well.

The candidate should be collaborative, have good editorial judgement, and a sense of humor. A sense of irony would be welcome, too.

The successful candidate will be required to join The Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA).

This role will be working inKQED's newly renovated headquarters. KQED requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, or to provide documentation of a need for exemption.

Essential Functions:

1. Hosting an early morning shift that begins at 4:15 a.m
2. Hosts/anchors daily statewide morning news segments.
3. Conducts live on-air news source and reporter debriefings.
4. Travels and reports on breaking and enterprise stories, and helps the TCR editor in developing coverage strategies, program topics, story themes and special projects.
5. Coordinates in-depth special projects and series as assigned.
6. Researches, reports, writes and produces stories from the studio and in the field for radio broadcast and for the web. Hosts and anchors other KQED News programs, as assigned.
7. Substitutes for other Hosts and Newscasters, as assigned.
8. Performs other essential duties as required.

Knowledge/Experience Required:

1. Demonstrated track record in broadcast, print and/or online journalism. Experience in hosting a radio program desired. 
2. Engaging and accessible presence on audio journalism platforms.
3. Experience of and aptitude for building a strong, collaborative and inclusive team culture.
4. Excellent writing and editing skills.
5. Excellent live interviewing and interpersonal communication skills.
6. Strong news judgment.
7. Demonstrated editorial coverage planning experience.
8. Working knowledge of a broad range of issues and subjects such as government and politics, economics, education, health,  legal affairs, and the environment.  Demonstrated interest in literature and the arts preferred.
9. Thorough knowledge of journalistic principles, ethics and standards.
10. Demonstrated ability to work under strict deadlines.
11. Demonstrated ability to handle late-breaking program changes under pressure.
12. Ability to contribute with a digital platform lens on all the content produced by the show

Knowledge/Experience Desired:

1. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent broadcast news gathering, editing and/or production experience.
2. Excellent knowledge of California’s news, politics, history and diverse communities.
3. Familiarity with social media.
4. Longform story-telling/enterprise diverse reporting experience
