    THE CITY is seeking a creative, highly motivated, impact driven Senior Editor to join its editorial team.


    The Organization

    Launched in 2019, THE CITY is New York City’s preeminent nonprofit, nonpartisan, local news organization. Working across all five boroughs, our award-winning journalists bring deeply diverse skills and backgrounds to the task of covering New York’s neighborhoods, holding the powerful to account, and making sense of the greatest city in the world, particularly in these unprecedented times.


    In the past year, journalism by THE CITY exposed inequities in vaccine access, helped secure repairs in public housing, and shone a spotlight on New York’s delivery workers. THE CITY collaborated with readers to share stories of loved ones lost to COVID, leading to our Missing Them project, widely noted for its innovation. And our Meet Your Mayor interactive guide helped hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers make sense of a wild election.


    THE CITY is currently in a growth phase that will add reporting and editing firepower to our newsroom, strengthen our business capabilities, and build our membership base.

     

    The Position

    The Senior Editor will work closely with a small team of editors to shape THE CITY’s overall coverage, from accountability journalism to beat reporting to explainers and other editorial products.


    As Senior Editor you will…

    • Mentor, manage and inspire a team of reporters covering New York City

    • Make assignments in consultation with other editors, ranging from ambitious investigations to daily news stories

    • Oversee reporting and hold it to exacting standards

    • Turn out impeccable, irresistible copy that can’t be put down

    • Lead on follow through, everything from social media to pushing for maximum impact to award submissions

    • Generate ideas for new editorial products that drive engagement and reach new audiences – and then execute them deftly


    Qualifications

    • At least 3 years of experience managing reporters

    • A proven track record of editing stories that have impact, hold the powerful to account and lead to change

    • Knowledge of New York City politics, communities and history. More importantly, an insatiable curiosity about everything in the 5 boroughs

    • Impeccable journalistic, ethical and legal judgment. You should know when to drive a story hard and fast, and when to slow it down to button it up.

    • The ability to thrive in a deadline-driven, news-aggressive environment

    • Excellent, excellent editing chops. You can write headlines that grab and turn around stories that move the reader and provoke action

    • Some experience in THE CITY’s ecosystem, whether that’s nonprofit journalism, local news, or impact-driven reporting

    • Ability to work evenings and weekends is a plus

    • A love of teamwork and a sense of fun (along with a seriousness of purpose)

    Other things to know…

    Salary Range: $90,000 to $110,000

    Benefits: Generous paid time off, including 20 vacation days, 6 holidays and 8 paid sick days. Medical, Dental and Vision. 401k Plan
