    NYPR seeks a highly skilled and creative Editor for “Only Human,” WNYC Studios’ new weekly podcast about health and our lives. We seek a sharp, fresh, confident thinker to help steer Only Human’s powerful storytelling around personal health, healthcare, medicine, and science.

    Reporting to the Executive Producer and working closely with the EP and Host, the Editor will be responsible for developing the editorial voice and direction of the show; guiding the generation of ideas and steering their execution; pitching guests and stories; editing stories; managing two staff reporters; recruiting and developing new contributors; and overseeing scripts and research. Most importantly, as one of the leaders of the team behind this new venture, the Editor is responsible for making Only Human’s content unmistakably original, distinctive, and unforgettable in an increasingly crowded podcast market.

    The successful candidate will be a superb and confident writer and editor, with an impeccable sense of storytelling in audio. Passion for and knowledge of health and medical issues are a plus. She or he will also thrive on creative collaboration.

    Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Oversee editorial planning of a weekly health podcast, radio segment, and website consistent with the mission and goals for the show; manage staff and freelancer assignments
    • Lead development of ideas for Only Human episodes and radio segments, including interviews, reported stories, listener engagement projects, and special series
    • Run weekly editorial meeting and manage workflow of story development from pitch to production
    • Edit (and often draft) host scripts; edit producers' work on interviews and stories
    • Edit reporter-driven episodes from conception to final mix, working closely on story structure and writing with reporter and host
    • Oversee outreach to contributors; solicit and edit contributor stories
    • Work closely with Executive Producer in episode selection and completion; perform final show QC as necessary
    • Edit (and occasionally write) copy for onlyhuman.org
    • Edit outgoing communications (newsletter, rundowns, future listings, etc.)
    • Collaborate with EP in writing/editing program treatments for grant submissions and reports, as needed
    • Work on other special projects and duties
    • Some administrative tasks, as needed

     Qualifications:

    • At least five years’ experience in fast-paced, idea-driven media environments
    • Impeccable journalistic integrity, rigor and editorial judgment; sharp attention to detail
    • A creative approach to storytelling, with a strong sense of character development, narrative arcs, and structure
    • Passion for and interest in diverse ares of health: science and the human body, medical research, public health, healthcare policy, wellness, mental health
    • Superb writing and editing skills showing originality, heart, and humor; experience writing and editing for broadcast strongly preferred
    • Experience working with freelancers in an editorial capacity
    • Experience working with talent
    • Familiarity with audio editing (preferably using ProTools) preferred
    • Familiarity with content management systems
    • Scrupulous organizational skills
    • Excellent communication skills, written and spoken.
    • Ability to manage several projects concurrently; effective time-management and ability to produce excellent work on deadline
    • Ability to collaborate closely and cheerfully with others and thrive in a team environment
    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
