To apply for this job please submit your materials via this form

Our live series, Pop-Up Magazine, is looking for a talented editor/producer to hunt for fascinating reported story ideas and then help produce them for live audiences across the country. You will work with an eclectic mix of reporters and writers, radio producers, filmmakers, and photographers—from early-career contributors to Oscar-winners, major artists, bestselling authors, and prominent personalities.

As an associate story producer, you will gather, pitch, and assign stories; team up with senior colleagues to edit them; collaborate with colleagues on art and music direction; and if interested, produce your own reported stories from time to time. You should know where to find stories and how to sense a really good one. You should be eager to build a wide network of potential contributors, and enjoy talking to them on the phone—and meeting lots of new people.

The ideal candidate could come from a variety of different backgrounds. You might be a writer or editor at a smart culture site, news site, or print magazine. Or a producer at a radio show or podcast (radio experience can be especially useful). Or you might be working in film, or even theater. Pop-Up Magazine produces live, multimedia shows, but we do not expect candidates to have experience in all genres of media. Your work history should demonstrate talent and professional experience in at least one medium, and an interview should reveal good instincts for how other genres of media might be mixed together. You should be intrigued by all that liveness offers as a medium, but live event experience is not necessary.

You should be self-directed, smart about managing your time, hard-working, and organized. You should be quick to volunteer your help with any number of day-to-day tasks that come up at a new and growing company. You should have lots of ideas.

The position requires a minimum of 2-3 years writing or editing stories for the web, radio, print, or film; solid research skills; lots of creativity; and an interest in pushing the boundaries of “live journalism.”

In the past year, Pop-Up Magazine has expanded from the symphony hall in San Francisco to Brooklyn’s BAM Howard Gilman Opera House, the Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles, Oakland’s Paramount Theater, and the TED Conference in Vancouver, as well as tour stops in Portland, Seattle, and Chicago, with more cities to come. We have big plans, and we’re eager to grow our team.

This position is full time, based in San Francisco, New York, or Los Angeles.

In all our work, diversity is really important to us.

To apply, submit a résumé and cover letter.

Salary will depend on experience. Associate Story Producers will receive equity in California Sunday, publisher of Pop-Up Magazine and The California Sunday Magazine, and health insurance.
