We’re looking for filmmakers to create films about women taking control, taking power and taking chances. The stories can range from the personal to the political, from the individual to the systemic. They can take place in the US or around the world. You can dig through CIR’s story archive for inspiration or pitch an original story.

Our goal is to create a body of work that can be presented as a series for distribution to a national audience, to bridge the worlds of journalistic and cinematic storytelling and to help foster enduring connections among all the women involved.

We value artistically told stories with interesting characters and narratives backed by solid journalistic and investigative elements. We define “investigative” broadly to include not just stories that expose wrongdoing, but also those that break new ground or give us access to places we otherwise might not see or people we otherwise might not meet. Your film should surprise, compel, entertain, inform and have the potential to make an impact and spark dialogue.

Filmmakers will receive a grant of up to $95,000 to produce their short film. You will also have access to CIR’s reporting resources and work with our in-house documentary team to help bring your stories to life. Additionally, you may have the opportunity to work with CIR’s in-house radio team to adapt your film for our national public radio show and podcast, “Reveal.”

Filmmakers will be chosen on a rolling basis between now and mid-October. Early applications are encouraged. All films must be completed by the end of June 2017.

A little more about us: The Center for Investigative Reporting is a nonprofit multiplatform news organization dedicated to engaging and empowering the public through investigative journalism and groundbreaking storytelling. Our work includes video, text reporting, interactive apps, live events and the nationally distributed radio show and podcast “Reveal,” which CIR co-produces with PRX.

To apply, please fill out this form by Sept. 23. All applications are encouraged- filmmakers need not be citizens or residents of the US.

In addition to the documentary series described here, the initiative also includes a one-year residency for emerging filmmakers and a pilot program for high school students interested in learning more about visual storytelling and investigative reporting.
