    We are now seeking a Deputy Head of News to join our editorial team in our New York Headquarters.

    Department: Editorial, Newsdesk

    Reports to: Deputy Editor [News]

    Normal location: New York, NY Terms and conditions: Full time, permanent, some weekend work required

    Purpose of role: The deputy head of news will be an integral part of the Guardian US news team and facilitate the running of the day, as well as long-term planning projects

    Key responsibilities & accountabilities

    • Help set daily news agenda

    • Generate story ideas – thinking digitally and visually, from graphics to video

    • Decide how best to approach a story – text, liveblogging, interactive, pictures

    • Monitor social feeds, wires, and news sources

    • Identify US stories that have resonance for a global Guardian audience

    • Identify themes, issues, trends that the Guardian should be attuned to

    • Identify news from a broad cross spectrum, from politics to culture, from social affairs to digital culture

    • Aware of the diversity of our news, in all its aspects

    • Commission reporters and correspondents

    •Plan coverage of future fixed events

    • Collaborate with audience, design and picture desk on presentation, packaging, promotion, distribution and social media strategy

    • Deputize for Deputy Editor [news] in their absence

    • Help to manage and develop the reporters and newsdesk

    • Liaise with Guardian US international editor about US coverage requested by UK team

    • Ensure smooth running of news desk by maintaining up to date rotas, newslist and forward planning documents
