The Center for Investigative Reporting engages and empowers the public through investigative journalism and groundbreaking storytelling that sparks action, improves lives and protects our democracy. Reveal – our website, public radio program, podcast and social media platforms – is where we publish our multiplatform work. We are recognized for our excellence, creativity and impact.

We are seeking a creative journalist who thrives on telling stories with data for a one-year position. Together, we will use data analysis to form the spine of engaging investigations in collaboration with a newsroom of experienced and dedicated journalists.

The ideal candidate is bursting with ideas and love collaboration, self-motivated and able to skillfully prioritize project requirements and constructively process competing feedback. You’ll have an eye for identifying the right story to tell with a set of data. You’ll have three or more years of experience in journalism, and are experienced in statistical analysis and modern data journalism practices and version control. You will excel at documenting your work, version control, backstopping, fact-checking and traditional shoe-leather reporting.

Experience in Python, SQL, data analysis, GIS, Javascript, HTML and building news apps are all strong pluses.

This full-time position is currently budgeted for one year, with the possibility of becoming a permanent position in the future.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

    • Executing both simple and complex data analyses in collaboration with the rest of the data team and the newsroom.

    • Using your story brain to conceptualize what each project wants to be. What’s important? What’s not? What’s the most efficient way to get it done?
    • Working in partnership with external newsrooms that are pitching Reveal or are part of Reveal’s partnership initiatives.
    • Training other journalists to advance their skills in data journalism and programming.
    • Always learning, staying up-to-date, pushing us forward.
    • Writing clean, well-documented, accessible, standards-compliant, future-friendly code.
    • Representing the newsroom internally and externally.

You will report to CIR’s senior data editor and interact daily with CIR’s data team and award-winning journalists in a highly collaborative newsroom that’s thinking big. Your stories could get adapted into long-form text, radio, documentary film or some other wild idea someone wants to try. We value good team players, voracious idea generators, humility and a constant willingness to teach, learn and experiment.

CIR offers a competitive salary and benefits package. Please send your résumé, cover letter and salary requirements. Please note that we will consider only applicants who submit all the requested materials.

Due to the expected volume of résumés, we will contact only those applicants with whom we would like to speak further.

CIR is an equal opportunity employer and actively works to diversify our workforce.
