    KQED Science Interactive Producer is the frontline breaking news daily reporter for the award-winning science news team at the #1 radio station in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Interactive Producer researches, writes, produces, publishes and helps promote original daily stories on the major science issues in California. This position works closely with the Senior Editor and Digital Editor to shape and implement the editorial vision for the KQED Science website.

    The ideal candidate is an experienced media producer and science journalist with top-level skills in blogging and online video. Basic coding and data visualization skills in HTML, JavaScript and/or CMS are preferred. The candidate must have a passion for science and technology and the ability to cover breaking news quickly. Knowledge of science issues in California is a plus. Professional experience in a fast-paced newsroom environment and skills in image editing are also required. Knowledge of social media outreach is required.      

    Essential Functions:

    ·         Report and write 1-4 stories of original content daily on the top science, environment and medical news stories. Write 1-2 stories of original content weekly that dive more deeply into a major science issue in the news, offering a unique perspective. Content may include but isn’t limited to: text and image articles, video, multimedia packages such as slide shows, live feeds and live blogs of breaking news events, and charts or graphics.

    ·         Provide debriefs for radio on breaking news topics, as assigned.

    ·         Ingest and curate top science stories daily from other media.

    ·         Update and repurpose KQED Science News stories.

    ·         Choose the daily science highlighted feature and sub-feature blocks, in consultation with the Digital Editor.

    ·         Monitor daily state and national science news developments and provide recommendations for coverage, which includes reporting and ingesting outside material.

    ·         Work with Digital Editor to boost audience engagement; make recommendations and implement editorial and audience engagement strategy.

    ·         Participate in headline brainstorms with staff reporters and editors.

    ·         Attend KQED Science news editorial weekly meetings and participate in overall Science editorial process.

    ·         Attend KQED Science Unit Wednesday staff meetings.

    ·         Write social media content.

    ·         Other duties as assigned.

    Credentials/Education Required 

    ·         Bachelor’s Degree 

    ·         Science journalism background or experience 

    Knowledge/Experience Required:

    ·         3 years experience as a blogger or interactive producer in a fast-paced newsroom 

    ·         Multimedia production skills 

    ·         Strong reporting and writing skills and experience in a fast-paced newsroom. A true team player who understands how to work productively to achieve journalistic excellence in a rapidly changing, geeky team environment.

    ·         Ability to meet tight deadlines and goals while working under breaking news pressure.

    ·         Interest in and passion about science, technology and/or environment.

    ·         Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail.

    ·         Independent thinker who works well in a team environment.

    ·         Strong communication skills, both written and in person, and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of stakeholders across the KQED organization.

    ·         Image editing and publishing skills (e.g. Photoshop).

    ·         Knowledge of content publishing tools (e.g. WordPress) and familiarity with various resources to keep up-to-date on latest news in digital journalism and design.

    Knowledge/Experience Desired:

    ·         Knowledge of major science issues in California.

    ·         Basic coding and data visualization skills in HTML, JavaScript and/or CMS.

    ·         Experience within public media.

    ·         Photojournalism experience.

    ·         Knowledge of or fluency in another language or languages.
