We are seeking a detail-oriented and digitally-minded deputy editor to help lead Spotlight PA, a new independent newsroom in Harrisburg, Pa. The mission of Spotlight PA and its dozen-person team is simple: to hold powerful private and public forces to account by producing investigative and accountability journalism that gets results and serves the public good. This exciting news initiative is powered The Philadelphia Inquirer in partnership with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and PennLive/Patriot-News, and our content is shared with additional partners across the state.

    About Us:
The Philadelphia Inquirer is a public benefit corporation owned by the nonprofit Lenfest Institute for Journalism. Together, we’re at the center of a critical mission to create a lasting future for ambitious, engaging, and useful local journalism. We’re doing this, in part, by deepening our connection with the communities we serve. Our integrated digital and print platforms are the Philadelphia region’s largest media network. We’re passionate about building a sustainable model for indispensable local journalism, and we take pride in finding diverse, dynamic, and talented individuals to help push our team forward.

    What You’ll Do

    • The deputy editor will oversee a team of reporters across various statewide beats and be responsible for assigning stories, editing copy, managing story elements and shepherding major projects as they roll out across our partner platforms, which reach in excess of 15 million unique visitors each month.
    • The deputy editor will work with the editor in chief to execute on the newsroom’s goal of creating compelling digital accountability journalism — with a focus on data-driven reporting — that gets results.

    Who We’re Looking For

    • Ideal candidates will have strong line editing and organization skills, as well as a razor sharp eye for detail and experience in a digital-first environment.
    • We’ll want someone who can conceptualize our journalism across different platforms and who’s not afraid to bring some big (even crazy) ideas to the table.
    • The best candidates will have a keen sense for which accountability stories will resonate and will know how to best tell those stories to maximize potential impact.
    • An ability to work in a collaborative environment with external partners is a must.
    • We’re an agile startup, and our team brings a sense of urgency and drive to its work each day. We value innovation, creativity and originality, and we’re always seeking to explore new and experimental ways of telling stories and connecting with audiences.

    Other Things to Know

    • Competitive salary and benefits package that includes a 401(k), parental leave, employee profit-sharing and more.
    • We know not everyone reading this will fit exactly what we’ve described. We encourage everyone to apply who shares our passion for indispensable journalism and our drive to create a sustainable business model to support it. As an equal opportunity employer, The Inquirer is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive culture, and we especially encourage members of underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people, and people with special needs.
    • Whether your experience includes time as an editor, you’re a reporter, or other type of journalist looking for a change, we encourage everyone who shares our passion for accountability reporting to apply and tell us why you’d be best.
    • The job is full time and will be based out of Harrisburg.
