We’re seeking a part-time research reporter to join our team at ProPublica! This position will be working on the Local Reporting Network and comes with full benefits. Candidates can be based anywhere in the United States.

We are looking for someone to work three or four days a week. This is a position for someone with a demonstrated history of newsroom work, preferably in a local setting.

ProPublica launched the Local Reporting Network to support local journalism by covering the salaries of, and providing editorial support for, reporters doing investigative journalism at news organizations across the country.

In prior classes of the Local Reporting Network projects, we’ve covered everything from PTSD in first responders to West Virginia’s natural gas industry. Researchers have contributed to those stories and even written some of their own. Local Reporting Network projects have gone on to win some of the most prestigious awards in journalism, including the Selden Ring Award and the Pulitzer Prize.

This research reporter will work with our Local Reporting Network editors to help local journalists find the public records that will shape their story. No two Local Reporting Network stories are alike, but researchers may help Local Reporting Network reporters learn to use research tools, file FOIA requests or connect the dots between bits of information, depending on the project.

This job is for somebody who has experience with or a strong enthusiasm for public records, databases such as LexisNexis and Pacer, and FOIA requests. The ideal candidate has a meticulous attention to detail, a passion for digging and strong news judgment. Data skills and fluency in languages other than English — especially Spanish — are a plus.

This is a grant-funded position that runs through August 31, 2021.

We want to hire journalists who bring a diversity of experiences, talents and viewpoints to their work. So, if you don’t think you can check off every box on the list above but are confident you can contribute to our efforts, please don’t hesitate to apply.

We are dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. (Here is a breakdown of our staff.) We are committed to diversity and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and ages. And we are taking steps to meet that commitment. We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.

If all of this sounds exciting to you, apply using this formThe deadline for applications is July 31. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S. ProPublica will not sponsor visas.

Have questions? Email Katie.Zavadski@propublica.org. Katie is ProPublica’s research editor, and this position will be reporting to her. No phone calls, please.
