Managing Editor, Quanta Magazine

    Quanta Magazine is seeking an accomplished editor and project manager to help lead the editorial team. This editor will be asked to manage day-to-day operations; coordinate complex projects; and ensure that every article, video, graphic, podcast and social media post meets the highest editorial standards.

    The ideal candidate will be an accomplished science journalist, a superb editor, a proven manager of both people and projects, and an unflinching advocate for independent journalism and scientific accuracy.

    This is a full-time position based in our New York City offices.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Coordinate Quanta’s editorial efforts across all platforms.
    • Manage complex editorial projects, ensuring that every team member understands their responsibilities and that projects are completed on time and to industry-leading standards.
    • Oversee Quanta’s day-to-day article production.
    • Work with the web development team to create new kinds of editorial products and features for the website.
    • Manage a team of at least two
    • Develop and maintain handbook of editorial guides, processes, policies, and best practices
    • Coordinate Quanta’s podcasting efforts, including our relationship with outside vendors. Suggest ideas for episodes (working with the rest of the Quanta team), plan interviews, review audio edits of episodes, and produce transcripts of the episodes for publication on the Quanta website.
    • Manage and edit (with the senior engagement editor) Quanta’s newsletters.
    • Work with senior editors as necessary to guide and oversee our coverage. Assist with idea generation and story selection, set goals and priorities for our coverage (in collaboration with the editor in chief and other senior leaders), and review edited articles before publication as needed.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • At least 10+ years of editorial or project management experience for established publications. Project management training and experience with database and tracking software is desirable but not essential.
    • Must be passionate about Quanta’s coverage areas of basic science and mathematics.
    • Must demonstrate command of the highest standards of written English.
    • Must be an excellent communicator and team player who thrives in a collaborative setting.
    • Must have the highest organizational skills and an exceptional attention to detail.
    • Must have extensive experience as a people manager and coach.
    • Must be familiar with modern web architecture, WordPress, audience metrics, social media and SEO.

    COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

    • The full-time annual compensation range for this position is $145,000 - $165,000, depending on experience.
    • In addition to competitive salaries, the Simons Foundation provides employees with an outstanding benefits package.
