    POSITION SUMMARY

    Quanta Magazine is seeking a first-rate reporter and writer to identify and cover newsworthy developments in mathematics. The ideal candidate will have tireless appetite for exploring the subtle rules that govern numbers, shapes and information; the ability to identify emerging research that is truly interesting and important; and a love of asking brilliant researchers really basic questions. We are looking for nothing less than an accomplished journalist, a superb writer with impeccable news judgment, and a diehard advocate for the highest standards in journalism and scientific accuracy.

    This full-time position will report to the executive editor and is based on-site at the Simons Foundation offices in New York City.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Pitch, report and write news articles, explainers, features and profiles about mathematics and the people who practice math.
    • Develop a stable of expert sources who will help keep you informed about the most important and interesting research happening today.
    • Collaborate with editors throughout the editorial and fact-checking process and partner with the design team in the development of artwork, graphics, videos and other associated features.
    • Work with the audience team to develop content that will enhance Quanta’s presence on social media and other platforms.
    • Occasional travel for in-person reporting opportunities, including meetings and conferences.
    • Occasionally write about other topics as needed.
    • Perform other duties or tasks as assigned or required.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education

    • Bachelor's degree

    Experience

    • At least two years of experience as a journalist covering math or math-adjacent ideas, preferably for a major publication.

    Related Skills & Other Requirements

    • Familiarity with mathematical concepts and research and a demonstrated knowledge of current developments.
    • Must be comfortable writing under deadline and be fluent in the best editing standards and online conventions.
    • Must be detail-oriented, organized and an excellent communicator demonstrating command of the highest standards of written English.
    • Must be an excellent communicator and team player who thrives in a collaborative setting.
    • Must be eager to grow as both a reporter and a writer.
    • Basic familiarity with WordPress is desirable.

    COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

    • The full-time annual compensation range for this position is $75,000 - $90,000, depending on experience.
    • In addition to competitive salaries, the Simons Foundation provides employees with an outstanding benefits package.
