    The Philadelphia Inquirer is seeking a sharp-eyed writer, editor and big-picture thinker to join its newsroom digital staff as Newsletter Strategist to play a central role in evolving our portfolio of editorial products.

    The ideal candidate has experience in developing an audience, launching new editorial products and has demonstrated success at digital innovation. We’re looking for a journalist who relishes experimentation and analytics. Strong writing skills and news judgement are also essential. We want a writer who is conversational, authoritative and smart.

    The Newsletter Strategist will help us continue evolving our portfolio to ensure that each newsletter has a clear strategy and defined audience, as well as a growth plan and the support to meet growth goals. The person will work hand-in-hand with Product on reader-facing features, and with Marketing on partnerships and other programs to grow our audience and push registration. This person will report to the Senior Newsletter Editor and work alongside The Inquirer’s Newsletter Editor in the writing, production and editing of The Inquirer’s flagship Morning Newsletter product.

    Candidates should have a firm handle on Philadelphia and the region, as well as a keen sense of what Philadelphians need and want to see in their inboxes every morning.

    What You’ll Do

    • In partnership with the Senior Newsletter Editor, Product and Marketing, develop scalable product maps and benchmarks for newsletter launch and maintenance

    • Help create and drive audience acquisition strategies for newsletters and other platforms

    • Set growth/engagement goals for each newsletter and hold writers/editors accountable for meeting them

    • Manage the newsletter calendar across the newsroom

    • Work with Marketing on registration pushes, partnerships and business-to business opportunities

    • Convene regular meetings of newsletter editors and provide regular reports to stakeholders about newsletter performance

    • Stay up-to-date on industry best practices and present new opportunities to newsroom and company leadership

    • Be creative in how we can engage with our audience via email and in other direct messaging platforms 

    • Facilitate the launch of new newsletters, as well as the revitalization and/or sunsetting of existing ones

    • Write and edit some editions of our newsletters

    Who We’re Looking For

    • At least 3 years of journalism experience, with a year or more focused on newsletters 

    • Proven project management skills and experience working across departments (Product, Marketing, etc.)

    • Excellent writing skills with a range of tone and voice

    • Proven experience with emerging platforms and the changing course of digital media

    • Exceptional news judgement

    • Audience development and SEO experience

    • Ability to work in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment

    • Ability to empathize with and listen to readers and respond to their needs

    • Understanding of modern digital content management tools and the ability to quickly master new tools and techniques as they arise

    • Ability to deeply analyze data to inform tactical and strategic decision-making
