Full-Time: Managing Editor, California Regional News Hub

  • 2021-07-06 12:45 PM
    Message # 10732136

Deadline to apply to this posting will be Monday, July 26th.

At this moment when accurate and deeply reported news has never been more important, NPR and member stations in California have joined forces through a regional “news hub” built on collaboration, with a focus on investigations and enhancing breaking news coverage. Our mission is to create journalism with impact, increase enterprise and investigative projects, and strengthen coverage of events and issues important to people in California and beyond.

We are looking for a dynamic, creative leader who can build on the hub’s successes and help it evolve to keep pace with the needs of the member stations and audiences. We need a highly organized manager who collaborates and communicates well with a wide range of stakeholders. This is also a hands-on role, so the managing editor must be able to edit audio and digital work, coach reporters, and make quick decisions about breaking news.

The managing editor will be an employee of KQED in San Francisco, but could choose to make their home base at one of the other partner stations: CapRadio in Sacramento, KPCC in Pasadena, KCRW in Santa Monica or KPBS in San Diego. NPR is also a managing partner of the California Newsroom.

NPR’s regional news hubs are designed to reshape the journalism landscape by enhancing regional coverage and collaboration among Member stations and this position presents an exciting opportunity to help lead that effort.

One of our core values at KQED is that we are better together, and that we commit to learning, growth, and holding ourselves accountable. We value the contributions of marginalized people in society — including Black, Indigenous, and all people of color,  people with disabilities, and LGBTQIA+ people — and we believe that these communities must be centered in the work we do, and we strongly encourage members of these communities to apply.

    Essential Functions:

    •  Develop the regional news hub’s editorial vision for new ways for stations to work together and with other partners to cover the state for local, regional and national audiences.
    • Work with stations and NPR to articulate the goals and desired outcomes for the California Newsroom.
    • Manage a team of investigative journalists working independently and with member stations to produce accountability journalism for local, state, regional and national audiences.
    • Lead statewide coordination of breaking news coverage, along with feature stories, digital and enterprise journalism.
    • Develop training for journalists at member stations with a high priority on helping member stations address diversity, equity and inclusion.
    • Work with partners such as NPR and Reveal on localizing investigations for individual stations.
    • Serve as the central point of contact for editorial leaders at the stations and as a liaison to NPR.
    • Communicate regularly with NPR to ensure that the best California coverage is reaching the broadest possible audience.
    • Ensure that processes are inclusive and that desired outcomes are broadly shared.
    • Create a plan for innovation, diversity and community service that reflects public radio’s communities and organizational mission.
    • Foster a creative and productive work environment.
    • Ensure a focus on audience needs rather than internal wants.

    Knowledge/Experience Required:

    • Strong leadership skills as demonstrated by at least three years in a supervisory and/or management position.
    • Proven journalism skills that include reporting, producing, editing (including AP style) as well as the news judgment and ability to generate factual, error‐free online copy quickly in breaking news situations.
    • Understanding of both on‐air and digital journalism production; experience in both platforms preferred.
    • Dedication to diversity in hiring, sourcing, topics and approaches is a must.
    • Experience as a strategic thinker with project‐management experience.
    • Record of excellent communication in person and to remote audiences/stakeholders.
    • Ability to collaborate with others and to develop detailed plans for stakeholders.
    • Passion and enthusiasm for online journalism and local news opportunities in California.

    Knowledge/Experience Desired:

    • Non‐English language skills (fluency in Spanish, Mandarin, or other languages spoken by large communities in California) are highly desired.
    • Working knowledge of a range of significant regional and statewide public affairs issues and subjects such as government and politics, the economy, education, health, immigration, legal affairs and the environment preferred.
    • Experience working in a demographically diverse news environment is strongly desired.
    • Experience in multimedia online news writing and storytelling is a plus.
