The Boston Globe is hiring a Web producer for its climate desk, part of a new investment in coverage of this critical issue. We’re looking for a savvy digital journalist with a wealth of energy and ideas who can help elevate our coverage at this pivotal time in the planet’s history.

Climate change is an existential threat. It is also a very personal one in Massachusetts, where science is a backbone of the economy and the rhythms of the ocean have long helped dictate our lives and habits. We’re looking for a journalist who understands that, and who can help communicate the urgency of the climate crisis in a way that feels personal and relevant to the Globe’s 200,000 digital subscribers and 10 million monthly readers.

The producer will be responsible for managing the Globe’s climate change presence on digital platforms. We prize versatility in our digital editors: We need someone who can write, edit, and bend even the most stubborn CMS to his or her will. The producer will work on news stories, features, and explainers, and also collaborate with environmental reporters and editors to shape online coverage. The producer should have experience with Web production and all the responsibility that comes with managing a section of a major website.

The producer should also be comfortable with data and data visualization, capable of parsing numbers to find stories and communicating to readers through charts and graphics. Additionally, the producer should have a keen eye for audience engagement and be well-versed in how to use social media, newsletters, and other channels to reach readers.

In addition, the editor should be someone who:

    • Possesses expert news judgment and feels comfortable making major news decisions independently.
    • Writes phenomenal headlines and has a knack for distilling complicated concepts into a handful of clear, crisp words.
    • Has deep experience publishing to digital platforms, whether it’s your site’s homepage, social media accounts, newsletters, alerts, or another avenue through which readers travel.
    • Is comfortable with data and data visualization. We don’t need a developer, but we do need someone who can find stories in data and who can collaborate with graphics artists and newsroom developers to tell stories in non-traditional ways.
    • Is fluent in audience analytics -- not only how to interpret them, but also how to use them as a tool to make decisions.
    • Thrives as part of a group setting, juggling multiple tasks at once and collaborating with your colleagues in a fast-paced environment.
    • Shows creativity. You constantly think about unorthodox ways to tell stories and convey the news to people. You thrive being at the cutting edge of technology and journalism, and want to help push this industry into the future.

    Requirements:

    • At least 2-4 years of experience as a journalist
    • Excellent headline writer
    • Strong editor, for both copy and clarity
    • Able to produce clean, informative copy quickly and on deadline
    • Experienced reporter familiar with sourcing and journalistic standards
    • Facility with using and learning new content management systems
    • Skilled at multitasking and juggling multiple, fast-moving storylines at once
    • Experienced with social media and other alternate platforms
    • A team player who thrives working in a group setting
    • Has a willingness to adapt, be audience focused with a curious mindset, and committed to creating an inclusive work environment
