    ASPEN PUBLIC RADIO: REPORTER


    Experienced public radio reporter/news host needed to join four-person news team at Aspen Public Radio in Aspen, CO.

    Join a growing public media organization based in Aspen, Colorado that serves vibrant communities in the beautiful Roaring Fork and Colorado river valleys. We seek a sharp, curious, team-oriented radio reporter who is excited by a commitment to quality journalism, community engagement, and helping to grow an evolving organization that has deep community roots. Our station culture is friendly and casual, but we are also professional with high standards of broadcast journalism. The local and regional news and media ecosystem is vibrant and healthy and our listeners and readers are well-informed and engaged. And the radio station is surrounded by an abundance of public land and wonderful recreational opportunities.

    Who We Are Looking For

    Passionate about local news, building community, and robust audio and digital storytelling. Brings ideas about how radio can be used to tell stories through features, daily spots, podcast productions, and digital online presentation. Someone who can host All Things Considered as needed, while working on long-range stories, features, and short news pieces simultaneously.

    Duties:

    • Produce news stories, features, and interviews for broadcast and digital distribution.

    • Cultivate a wide pool of sources throughout the Roaring Fork Valley with the goal of creating thoughtful, meaningful, original content.

    • Work with a team of colleagues to produce daily newscasts on a deadline.

    • Ability to report breaking news and ongoing community safety stories, such as wildfire coverage.

    • Work with regional NPR editors to regularly nationalize regional stories.

    • Ability to serve as a peer editor when needed.

    • Serve as the local host for All Things Considered as needed and as a back-up host for Morning Edition as needed.

    • Participate in trainings and workshops on a quest for constant improvement and growth.

    • Attend major donor events and other public events produced by the station, participate in on-air fundraising campaigns, and help to represent the station at other community events.

    • Other duties as assigned.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Must have solid experience in radio reporting, audio editing and production, and on-air hosting.

    • Deep demonstrated knowledge of the ethics and practices of journalism.

    • Understanding of the purpose and mission of public broadcasting.

    • Strong time management skills; ability to meet deadlines on a regular basis.

    • Excellent collaboration skills.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Public Radio experience

    • Knowledge of issues facing the West and specifically the Western Slope Colorado

    • Demonstrated content collaboration experience

    • A sense of humor always helps… if it was up to our News Director, this job description would simply say: “Must report like a wizard, write like an angel, produce like a champ, and sound great on the air.”

    This is a full-time salaried position reporting to the Aspen Public Radio News Director, requiring availability for day, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts. It is required that this employee be a full-year residence in Aspen or another Roaring Fork Valley community. Relocation support is available. APR offers full-time staff benefits including employer-paid health insurance, 403(b) match and paid vacation. Ski pass financing and rapid transit bus pass financing is available, along with shared passes to world-class events such as the Aspen Film Festival and Aspen Institute Ideas Festival.
