KQED News is looking for a full-time digital editor, a skilled and savvy journalist with expertise in editing news content and fact-checking across digital platforms.

We're looking for an editor with experience working in daily news; who has a working familiarity with data, enterprise or investigative stories; and who has an interest in science, climate, health or COVID coverage. If this is you, or if there are aspects of your journalistic experience that relate to any of those particular areas, please note that prominently in your cover letter.

The ideal candidate should also be communicative, collaborative and extremely organized, and able to prioritize under time constraints with grace and accuracy. They should be well accustomed to working for fast-paced publications and should want to thrive in an environment where flexibility and continuous learning are encouraged.

This editor will edit news stories and content for KQED.org, engagement platforms and anywhere else text could possibly live online. They should be skilled in all aspects of front-end online production. The ideal candidate excels at writing engaging and effective display copy such as headlines, sub-headlines, summaries and captions.

Along with editing daily and weekly stories, the duties include editing longer-form features; bulletproofing stories with data, investigative or interactive elements; project-managing stories from pitch to publication; developing reporting plans; story production; helping to enforce an in-house style guide; collaborating with different teams and departments; and growing a familiarity with KQED content, stories and voice.

This editor will be a key hire as KQED continues to integrate and streamline weekday and weekend news operations. Their shift will be Sunday through Thursday, and their hours will be geared toward later in the day — starting in the late morning or early afternoon, and helping to provide coverage through the early evening.

One of our core beliefs at KQED is that we are better together, and that we must commit to grow and improve each day, and hold ourselves accountable when we fall short of that commitment. When we do not stick to our values, our actions will disproportionately hurt the most marginalized people in society — including Black, Indigenous and all people of color, people with disabilities and LGBTQIA+ people. We believe that these communities must be centered in the work we do. We strongly encourage candidates from all marginalized communities to apply.

    • Experience writing and editing quickly and accurately.

    • Experience with editing multimedia content such as graphics, interactives or videos.
    • Proven collaboration skills — which are essential in working with fellow KQED staffers across departments and with partner organizations.
    • Experience navigating the front and back end of a content management system.
    • Familiarity with social media and engagement platforms.
    • Ability to work on their own and as part of a team.
