Roll Call internships involving writing for one of the more respected newspapers in America. Covering Congress and Capitol Hill since 1955, Roll Call reporters have an opportunity to observe and write about one of the true power centers. Roll Call interns have gone on to illustrious careers in journalism, and many of them end up being hired at Roll Call.

The newspaper normally publishes daily when Congress is in session, and once or twice a week during recess.

The internships are full-time, paid positions that generally begin at the start of a traditional university semester (i.e., early September, mid-January, and mid-May to early June) and run through the normal length of the semester (generally, mid-December, mid-May and early August). Interns are expected to report to work between 9:30 and 10 and stay to around 5:30 or 6, depending on the day and the workload. In terms of writing expectations, interns produce at least one article a week, and often more, again depending on the subject and the need, mainly for the Around the Hill section of the paper.

Interns with Roll Call primarily write feature stories for the Around the Hill section, which can include book reviews, museum openings, gallery shows, films, food and events around town. In addition, interns may be asked to cover press conferences or to assist with the Heard on the Hill column (the gossip column), or to help reporters and editors with investigative tasks. The position requires some journalism experience.
    Roll Call Application Process:
Applicants for internships should submit a resume and may be asked to submit at least two writing samples to the hiring manager upon request.

In 200 words or fewer, please tell us about an interesting experience or difficult decision you’ve faced while reporting. Use the notes section of this application.

    No phone calls please.
