    The Committee to Protect Journalists is seeking a part time, freelance correspondent with knowledge of China and neighboring countries in the region. The correspondent will work in consultation with colleagues based in New York, Bangkok and South Asia.

    The correspondent will have extensive familiarity with regional press freedom issues, experience as an advocate, the ability to report breaking news and to produce in-depth special reports. The correspondent will have a proven commitment to improving press freedom conditions in a region where freedom of expression in constantly under threat.

    The correspondent may be based in the United Sates or Asia but must demonstrate legal status to work in the country where they are based.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • File written submissions (news alert, blog entry, or letter) on press freedom issues per week, for distribution and publication on our website.
    • Assist the Asia program in anticipating and responding to news and events affecting press freedom and journalists to ensure that these issues are brought to a broad international audience.
    • Conduct research on individual journalists within the framework of CPJ’s Journalist Assistance Program.
    • Compile a year-end list of journalists jailed in countries in Northeast Asia.
    • Candidate should have a firm understanding of geopolitical issues with the ability to analyze and relate these to press freedom as needed.

    Language: Fluency in English is essential; Mandarin is an important asset.

    Writing test: The successful candidate will have to pass a writing test.

    This is a one-year, part-time position.
