    The Takeaway is looking for an experienced journalist to join one of the fastest growing and most successful radio programs in the country. The program reflects and reacts to the passions and concerns of its audience. It is committed to upholding the highest standards of broadcast & online journalism. Since 2012 it has enjoyed spectacular growth and is looking to add to its talented team of producers. 

    Candidates should have proven broadcast and source-building skills, the ability to self-start, pitch story ideas, and keep across fast-moving events in the US and around the world. This is a demanding position and will favor those driven to deliver first rate and distinctive programs both on air and online. The Senior Producer will be a top tier member of the team. Responsibilities will include: planning and generating future story ideas and assignments, managing performance, building new partnerships and leading the daily news team. S/he will work closely with the Executive Producer, host John Hockenberry, the Planning Editor, and the Digital Editor. 

    The Senior Producer will play a leading role in shaping upcoming election coverage for The Takeaway. The successful candidate will also ensure the team maintain forward diaries and develop contacts with relevant organizations and guests. Extensive news experience working on a tight deadlines and exceptional editorial judgment are prerequisites for this position. You will deliver distinctive programs both on air and online. 

    This role will fit those who with the ability to think of new ways to work with an exacting audience. It requires an experienced, confident individual who knows how to best mirror the diversity of the country. S/he must be willing to tackle the uncomfortable and have her/his opinions challenged. The Takeaway is a respected program that aims to provide intelligent and informed conversation for curious minds. You will be part of a team that delivers insight and analysis throughout the week to a national audience well over two million and heard on more than 250 stations across the country. 

    Must Have Qualities:

    • National broadcast experience
    • Ability to produce live news reports and / or audio podcast reports
    • National politics, policy, and foreign affairs reporting experience a must

    Responsibilities:

    • Able to implement a strategic vision and uphold the highest editorial standards
    • Produce and bring to air national & international stories that engage one of the most demanding audiences in the country
    • Manage an award winning team of producers based in New York, Boston, and San Francisco
    • Work with WNYC, Public Radio International, The New York Times and other partners of The Takeaway

    Qualified candidates will have the following:

    • College degree required; masters degree preferred
    • Minimum of five years production experience required
    • Excellent writing, reporting, and broadcast skills
    • Ability to research, repor,t and tell many kinds of stories
    • Ability to juggle multiple tasks with accuracy and efficiency and work well with all staff from producers and editors based at WNYC

    • Excellent communication skills-both oral and written-with an impressive reputation for building and maintaining relationships with people at all levels of an organization, across a diverse range of cultural, generational, ethnic, racial, educational and social backgrounds.
    • Use of a computer, telephone and other office and/or broadcast equipment.
    • Ability to communicate effectively through a variety of methods including but not limited to: email, internet based applications for internal and external communications.
    • Affinity for New York Public Radio; WNYC and/or WQXR content and mission a plus.
    • Compliance with WNYC/WQXR policies and guidelines.
    • Ability to work extended hours as needed.
