To apply for this job please submit your materials via this form

We’re conducting a national search for an Associate Editor at The California Sunday Magazine. Editors here are responsible for gathering and generating story ideas, finding new writers, editing stories, writing from time to time, and contributing to a variety of projects throughout the organization. We’re interested in vivid characters, engrossing plots, and surprising tales from across California, the West, Asia, and Latin America. You’ll work with prominent journalists as well as emerging talents. You should be full of ideas, and believe that this is an exciting time to be making media.

Just a year and a half old, California Sunday has been a finalist for three National Magazine Awards, and a winner in 2016. We also produce the acclaimed live event series Pop-Up Magazine, which presents new, mostly reported stories by writers, radio producers, photographers, and documentary filmmakers at 2,000- and 3,000-seat venues across the country—and there are opportunities for California Sunday editors to contribute.

The ideal candidate should have at least 2-3 years of professional experience writing or editing reported stories for a large audience; he or she should be creative, self-directed, hard-working, and eager to collaborate with and learn from colleagues.

This position is full-time, based in Los Angeles or San Francisco.

In all our work, diversity is really important to us.

If you have more ideas than formal experience, you may still apply, but we recommend a longer cover letter offering at least three story ideas and a critique of the magazine.

Salary will depend on experience. Employees receive equity in California Sunday, publisher of The California Sunday Magazine and Pop-Up Magazine, and health insurance.
