Our live series, Pop-Up Magazine, is looking for an experienced producer or editor to help us find fascinating reported story ideas and then produce them for live audiences across the country. You will work with prominent journalists and authors, popular radio personalities, award-winning filmmakers, and major photographers, as well as emerging talents in a variety of media.

As story producer, you will gather, pitch, and assign stories; edit them; assist with art and music direction; and if interested, perform your own stories from time to time. You should know where to find stories and sense a good one when you see it. You should have a network of journalists and other creative people you can tap as contributors.

The ideal candidate could come from a variety of different backgrounds. You might be a story editor at a magazine or a news or culture site with a reputation for great features. Or a producer at a radio show or podcast—radio experience can be especially useful. Or you might be working in film. Pop-Up Magazine produces live, multimedia shows, but we do not expect candidates to have experience in all genres of media. You should have exceptional skills in at least one medium and good instincts for how other media might be mixed together. You should enjoy collaboration.

The position requires a minimum of five years editing or writing stories for radio, print, online, or film; solid research skills; lots of creativity; and an interest in pushing the boundaries of “live journalism.” Experience with Pro Tools and/or Final Cut is a plus. Experience editing or writing funny material is another plus.

In the past year, Pop-Up Magazine has expanded from the symphony hall in San Francisco to Los Angeles, Oakland, Portland, Seattle, Chicago, Brooklyn, and Vancouver. We have big plans, and we need someone to come help.

This position is full time, based in San Francisco, Los Angeles, or New York. 

Salary will depend on experience. The story producer will receive equity in California Sunday, publisher of Pop-Up Magazine and The California Sunday Magazine, and health insurance.
