We’re conducting a search for a national politics staff writer at The California Sunday Magazine. The position may be based in San Francisco, Los Angeles, or Sacramento. We might consider Washington, DC.

The California Sunday Magazine covers California, the West, Asia, and Latin America for a national audience. Just two years old, California Sunday has been a finalist for three National Magazine Awards, and a winner in 2016. Our features are regularly picked up by Longform, Longreads, and local and national public radio, shared widely on social media, and optioned for television and film. We also produce the acclaimed event series Pop-Up Magazine, which presents live-scored, reported, multimedia stories by writers, radio producers, photographers, and filmmakers, onstage at large venues across the country, such as BAM Howard Gilman Opera House in Brooklyn, Berkeley’s Greek Theatre, the Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles, and Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco.

Our politics staff writer will work closely with the editor in chief to plan California Sunday’s political coverage; write long reported features and short reported dispatches on stories of national political significance set in California and the West, as well as stories set in Washington, DC with significance for California and the West; develop additional story ideas to assign to freelance contributors; and identify new contributors, especially emerging political writers, for both California Sunday and our live Pop-Up Magazine shows.

You might have a widely recognized byline or you might be a talented reporter and writer somewhat earlier in your career. Either way, your clips should show sophisticated, original reporting, a deep understanding of national politics and policy, and a knack for narrative feature writing. Your work should appear in national outlets known for high-quality reported features. You should be full of ideas and believe that this is an exciting time to be making media.

Salary will depend on experience. Staff writers receive equity in Pop-Up Magazine Productions, publisher of The California Sunday Magazine and Pop-Up Magazine, and health insurance.
