Our programs can be seen in over 110 countries, and over 25 million Americans tune in each month, making NOVA one of the most watched series in the PBS prime time lineup. NOVA values new ideas and smart analysis of our content. Along with long-form documentaries, NOVA produces a media-rich web site and other free digital content that extends the NOVA brand beyond broadcast.

    Position Overview

    The Senior Digital Editor is responsible for the development and production of journalistic content for the site, in alignment with the strategic vision for editorial content across NOVA broadcast and digital platforms. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, researching and writing original content, identifying and assigning stories to freelance journalists, science bloggers and internal staff, and conducting editorial review of all content (including newsletters) prior to publishing. Curate links to relevant science stories and develop editorial and distribution partnerships to expand the reach and relevancy of NOVA content. Implement and manage a SEO focused editorial approach and develop best practices for the team. In coordination with NOVA’s Deputy Executive Producer and Director of Audience Development, maintain a strong editorial social media presence both internally and through a network of journalists and bloggers working on NOVA's behalf. Work closely with the broadcast team to ensure integration and maximize opportunities for cross-promotion between digital and documentary production.

    Produce weekly columns/articles & develop related social media content/presence.

    Identify freelance contributors and commission and edit articles. Work closely with the Digital Managing Producer to obtain information necessary to hire, contract, and pay freelance contributors.

    Provide editorial oversight and in-depth review of all content prior to publishing.

    Curate links and maintain editorial partnerships to enhance reach and relevancy of NOVA content.

    Inform and implement digital strategy and work closely with broadcast team to ensure synergy between digital and documentary production

    Skills Required

    The ideal candidate will have at least 7-10 years’ experience as a science journalist with a proven ability to write under tight deadlines and cultivate a network of writers and bloggers. Producing content for a digital environment, including related social media components, digital partners and multiple platforms, including mobile, is key and expertise with multi-media production is a must. Experience developing and telling stories that incorporate short form video, interactive, infographics and photos is essential. Proven ability to work in a team environment and supervise editorial work of others. Experience with other digital platforms and content management systems is highly desirable.

    Exceptional journalistic and oral communication skills, and a strong attention to detail.

    Results oriented self-starter with a demonstrated ability to prioritize and timely manage resources and multiple projects simultaneously.

    Demonstrated ability to engage and work collaboratively with talent, creative teams and business staff, in a fast-paced environment.

    Bachelor’s degree required.
