The Seattle Times, the Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper, is actively seeking a dynamic Features Editor in the newsroom. As a manager overseeing the arts, food/drink, travel/outdoors, lifestyle, and entertainment Features content, this vital news position provides clear vision and clarity for established, long-term coverage, planning, and content. Additionally, you will be responsible for orchestrating the efficient coordination of the Features operation while also providing general newsroom leadership in pursuit of our shared mission and adhering to journalistic standards.

Additional Responsibilities

• Provide leadership, administration and operational management of the Features staff. Initiate and oversee staff development.
• Communicate and coordinate Features coverage plans to other editors and departments.
• Supervise editors who plan, gather, evaluate, select and edit materials for print and digital publication.
• Plan and execute timely, accurate, creative and fair Features content on multiple platforms. Direct staff on story ideas and their execution. Review and evaluate stories, determining their use and editing as necessary.
• As team leader, balance a nimble response to breaking news and trending topics, with demands of long-range, planned features.
• Seek diversity in coverage.
• Develop operating budgets, authorize overtime and expenditures, and manage expenses to meet budget projections. Understand variances and be able to explain monthly if requested.
• Be knowledgeable about lifestyle and entertainment stories, sources, issues, background, personalities, events, etc. and apply knowledge to producing timely, newsworthy content to be published on multiple platforms.

Qualifications

• Experience: Requires five years’ experience at a daily news operation, including supervisory experience, or the equivalent.
• Education: Requires a bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Must have excellent grammar and language skills.
• Must have typing and proficient computer skills, including the ability to learn and train others on proprietary software systems, as well as popular social media platforms.
• Must have reader engagement skills, including participation in chats, comments or use of engagement tools on sites such as Reddit.
• Must have the ability to analyze stories and make informed judgments about content, libel, newsworthiness, fairness, accuracy, etc. under pressure and on deadline.
• Must understand and uphold the standards, ethics and mission of journalism at The Seattle Times, regardless of platform.
• Must read The Seattle Times and other relevant news sources to keep abreast of current events.
