As ProPublica’s local news operation expands, we are looking to increase our ability to tell local stories natively on social, publish on the weekend and monitor the weekend news media.

The audience editor, news, social & weekends will take the lead in programming and monitoring our social media channels with an emphasis on bringing our local news coverage into the national conversation.

    What you would be doing:

    • Working with the platforms editor, masthead editors and local editors to launch large social campaigns for local projects.

    • Working with reporters and editors to edit breaking news stories, explainers, threads and folos as needed, with a special emphasis on translating local news for a national audience.

    • Providing editing support for expanded publishing, Thursday through Monday, and other days depending on the news cycle.

    • Creating and managing an AP-style news calendar, ensuring ProPublica’s social media programming is aligned with and informed by current events.

    • Working with the platform editor to set standards, workflow, metrics and goals for each social platform.

    • With the platform editor, serving as a point person for communications, engagement and other project leads and editors to establish best practices and schedule promotional and engagement social media programming.

    • Monitoring the weekend news programs, including broadcast news and specialty news shows, for ProPublica relevance.

    • Managing weekend newsletter sends and push alerts as needed.

We’re looking for someone who has:

    • The ability to work a flexible schedule and experience editing breaking news stories (required).

    • Visual storytelling skills and fluency with image, audio and video editing software (strongly desired).

    • Familiarity and comfort working in a CMS, Google Docs, Google Sheets, social media platform backends, Google Analytics, Chartbeat, Crowdtangle, Buffer and SocialFlow (required).

    • Experience with ESPs such as SailThru or MailChimp (preferred).

We know there are great candidates who may not fit into what we’ve described above, or who have important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

We are dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. (Here is a breakdown of our staff.) We are committed to diversity and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and ages. And we are taking steps to meet that commitment. We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.

If all of this sounds exciting to you, you can apply using this form. The deadline for applications is 11:59 p.m. PST on Sunday, Nov. 1.

This job is full time and includes benefits. The position will be based in our New York office, but we’re open to remote working if the fit is right.
