When everyone else is done with a story, do you still ask, “Yes, that’s fine, but why? And what else?” The California Newsroom is hiring a data journalist, someone who is curious about the programs and policies that shape our lives, with the capacity to analyze data and present the numbers in a way that informs audiences across platforms.

Just look at the recent news cycle. There are opportunities to delve further into police misconduct,  or the trail of budget cuts as a result of COVID-19; examine race and equity in technology,  education and health care, and attempt to figure out  the persistent problem of homelessness —  and more.

So, what is the California Newsroom? It’s a statewide news partnership of NPR, KQED, Cap Radio, KPCC, KCRW, KPBS and other public media organizations across the state.

This position  will work with the managing editor of the collaborative, an investigative editor and journalists across the state and the country, to establish a statewide investigative team. This team will not cover general assignment stories, or build quick-turnaround maps or data viz for daily projects. Instead, this job will focus on using data to explore abuses of power and betrayals of the public’s trust across the state, through enterprise reporting and in collaboration with stations throughout California. This position can be located anywhere in the state.

This is a grant funded initiative.

    Essential Functions:

    • Make public records requests and scrape, clean and analyze the resulting data
    • Help design and lead projects from abstraction through testing and deployment
    • Prototype interactivity and demonstrate design ideas to a group
    • Plan and execute quantitative analyses — and interpret results — in support of investigative stories and visualizations
    • Assist fellow reporters in the collaborative  with data brainstorming, acquisition, cleaning, integrity-checking and analysis
    • Teach and encourage best practices and newsroom data policies across stations

    Knowledge/Experience Required:

    • Solid knowledge of UI/UX fundamentals.
    • Fluency in modern and widely supported front- and back-end programming languages (i.e. R, Python, Javascript, React)
    • Strong knowledge of HTML, CSS and modern web design and development tools
    • Newsroom experience, either locally or nationally, especially involving stories that are centered around telling people’s stories, especially in marginalized communities.
    • Ability to stay focused, organized and proactive. You’ll be working with a number of journalists across organizations, potentially dealing with several different editors.
    • A good listener — this includes on social media and across online platforms. We want to understand what conversations are or might be around a particular topic — and then turn that insight into actionable items.
    • Excellent communication skills.

    Knowledge/Experience Desired:

    • Non-English language skills (fluency in Spanish, Mandarin or other languages with large California speaking populations) desired
    • Familiarity with a range of significant regional and statewide public affairs issues and subjects such as government and politics, the economy, education, health, immigration, legal affairs and the environment.

    Non-Essential Functions:

    • Other duties, as assigned.
