News Application Developer/Web Developer

    The web developer will work with the nextLI team to build a new data product and community messaging portal that will be the central components of our 2021 Google News Initiative Innovation Challenge project. This will be a temporary assignment and is remote friendly. For additional questions, feel free to email kai.teoh@newsday.com

    Essential Duties & Functions

    • Works with the nextLI team to build integrations between newsroom web tools, databases and build enhancements to nextLI’s WordPress site.
    • Works closely with HTML/CSS designers and with the rest of the development team to build web and mobile products that emphasizes usability and best practices.
    • Provides ongoing maintenance and troubleshooting when bugs or errors are encountered.
    • Stays abreast of industry issues, trends and inventory solutions and recommends improvements to the development team.
    • Performs other duties assigned by management.

    Essential Job Knowledge & Skills

    • BA/BS degree or equivalent experience with Internet technologies and production environments.
    • At least two years of experience in web design or front-end web development.
    • High level of proficiency in writing Python.
    • High level of proficiency in writing Javascript.
    • Proficiency in HTML5, Object-oriented JS (>=ES6), Object-oriented PHP (>=7.1) and CSS3.
    • Experience with Git/GitHub.
    • Experience with WordPress.
    • Professional experience collaborating in a team environment on large-scale website development projects.
    • Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment and be able to interact effectively with other team members, management and clients. 
    • Must be willing to learn and master new technologies as they arise.
    • Must be a self-starter and able to think critically and problem solve
    • Familiarity with Datasette is a plus
    • Experience contributing to open-source projects is a plus
    • Experience building open-source plugins for established frameworks is a plus
    • Experience working in a journalist or data journalist-capacity is a plus
    • Understanding of site structure, navigation, UI principles, wireframes and user flow


    Physical Requirements

    • Close visual acuity required to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
    • This position requires engaging regular conversations with others and facilitate presentations and meetings.
    • Requires continuous use of computer navigation and typing.
