THE CITY (THECITY.nyc), an independent nonprofit news platform dedicated to serving the people of New York through hard-hitting journalism, is seeking a reporter to bolster our people- and accountability-driven coverage of city government, beginning with the 2021 municipal elections.

As a critical member of THE CITY’s 24-person team, you’ll work in a vibrant (virtual — for now) newsroom filled with extraordinary journalists dedicated to reporting the news that matters most to New Yorkers (https://thecity.nyc/about/team.html).

    KEY SKILLS

    The ideal candidate will:

    • Be a scoop machine who generates exclusive, high-impact stories on both short-turnaround pieces and longer-term, in-depth projects
    • Arrive with relevant sources or have a demonstrated ability to cultivate them quickly
    • Produce engaging work that’s driven by people and grounded in data, interviews and research
    • Show creativity and resilience in reporting and research amid whatever challenges come
    • Turn out sharp prose and firmly structured stories on deadline
    • Know how to effectively use digital reporting and engagement methods, via social media and more, to propel a story, from the reporting to post-publication
    • Embrace THE CITY’s mission of service to the people of New York — and deliver on it

    KEY CHARACTERISTICS

    • Brim with energy, ideas and story pitches
    • Work well with others in a fast-moving, deadline-driven newsroom filled with people passionate about the power and importance of local news
    • Stand out as an excellent all-around communicator
    • Make complex information compelling to non-experts
    • Find innovative solutions to challenges
    • Work with editors to set ambitious goals and meet them
    • Show tenacity and grit, with a passion for follow-up
    • Won’t rest until the job is done (spoiler alert: The job is never done).
    • Thrive in a start-up environment and be ready to grow with THE CITY

    PREFERRED MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

    • Undergraduate degree from four-year college/university
    • Three years relevant work experience

THE CITY is committed to diversity and especially encourages members of underrepresented communities to apply. We offer equal opportunity employment regardless of race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability status, age, marital status, or protected veteran status.

    COMPENSATION

Compensation, which is commensurate with experience, is competitive and includes health, dental, vision, 401k and vacation benefits.
