Crain Communications is seeking an experienced digital designer to join our award-winning team in creating innovative storytelling for our four business publications in Chicago, New York, Cleveland and Detroit. Story experiences include photography, illustration, video and data visualizations across several areas, such as business, climate, technology, finance, energy and health.

This is a highly collaborative role that includes working with editors, reporters, and other visual journalists. We are looking for a strong designer who can build what they design.

You will report to the Creative Director.

Responsibilities include:

• Work closely with editors, reporters and other visual journalists to generate ideas and build multimedia stories for digital audiences.

• Demonstrate excellent news judgment and sound technical approaches for smart user experiences on desktop and mobile platforms.

• Work quickly and efficiently to meet deadlines, occasionally working outside of regular office hours.

• Stay on top of visual trends and techniques that can be applied to interactive projects.

• Help reporters, editors and designers learn new skills that will contribute to their visual storytelling.

• Help review and provide feedback on other digital projects that are created within the company.

Qualifications:

• At least three years of experience in an equivalent role, with a good understanding of business and multimedia journalism.
• Superior skills in interactive design, including color, typography, layout and user experience.
• Expertise with Adobe design software.
• Expertise with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
• At least one or two other specialties preferred, which might include video editing, illustration, animation or cartography.
