The Atlantic has, for more than 160 years, advanced ideas that matter and sparked global conversation on the most important issues of our time. We aim to bring clarity and original thinking to questions of consequence, on topics ranging from politics, the economy, and global affairs to technology, science, and culture. As the third-longest-running magazine in America, we find ourselves at a remarkable moment: one of both continuation and transformation, of upholding our legacy while continuously reinventing ourselves for the future.

The Atlantic is seeking an assistant editor to join the newsroom's Culture team, which includes the Culture, Books, Family, and America in Person desks. The ideal candidate will be curious, detail-oriented, and well-read in magazine journalism. The position is full-time.

Assistant editors are key members of the newsroom, working closely with senior editors on all stages of The Atlantic’s journalism. Responsibilities will include—but aren't limited to—fact-checking, story research, participating in editorial meetings, maintaining team calendars, vetting submissions, and preparing edited work for publication online. The position may have occasional opportunities for writing and editing, as well.

Qualifications of the ideal candidate include:

    • At least two years of experience in journalism, publishing, or a related field. (School experience can count.)

    • Familiarity with the latest ideas and developments in the fields covered by the Culture team.

    • Excellent writing, editing, and research skills. In particular, a facility for identifying trends in the broader culture, as well as in human behavior and relationships—and for communicating them to a general-interest audience.

    • A passion for ideas and a strong sense of what distinguishes journalism about culture, books, family, and social identity at the Atlantic.

    • Excellent time management, with the ability to communicate effectively within a fast-paced, tight-knit team, and to accomplish both discrete tasks and longer-term projects on deadline.

This role can be based in New York or Washington, D.C.
